The economy has been based largely on agriculture since then though some manufacturing has taken place. Today, Fairview is known for its wide variety of ethnic foods available at various restaurants and grocery stores as well as its large number of parks and playgrounds.
The area now known as Fairview was first settled in the mid-1700s by Native Americans. In 1795, the British granted a land grant to Nicholas Livingston, who named it after his father, Sir Nicholas Livingston. The grant included 1,000 acres (400 hectares) on the south side of Passaic River. By 1800, more than 100 families had tilled and farmed this land. In 1814, following the War of 1812, New Jersey became part of the United States of America and Fairview became part of Middlesex County. In 1835,Fairview Township was created from parts of Middlesex and Union counties. In 1870, an act were passed making Rutgers University a founding member of what is now called the Ivy League. Rutgers chose Fairview as one of its two campuses in order to attract students from throughout New Jersey and beyond. The university has since grown to include over 40 colleges and universities across New Jersey and Pennsylvania with a total enrollment exceeding 200,000 students. The township continued to grow through various industrialization periods until population levels began reaching their current levels around 1960 when large numbers (and accompanying suburban sprawl) began arriving in what is now eastern Morris County . As population growth slowed over subsequent decades culminating in 2000 when there were only 438 residents living within commuting distance to jobs in central Manchester , FairVIEW essentially ceased to exist as an economically significant community
