Fairview was founded in 1795 by the brothers Peter and John Fairview. The first settler, John Fairview, named his land for Captain John Fenton of the British naval ship HMS Beagle which had landed at Plymouth on July 5, 1793. In 1838, the United States bought part of what is now Camden County from Great Britain. In 1845, Camden County was divided into two parts – one including Fairview and portions of East Brunswick and Westminister – while East Brunswick became a separate municipality. In 1892, FairVIEW was renamed after Edwin EverettHotchkiss (1841-1912). He served as Mayor of Camden County from 1893 to 1912 and as Governor of New Jersey from 1911 to 1912. After his death in 1912, his name was given to the new town’s high school which opened in 1916. Today, FairVIEW is home to several businesses including its namesake shopping center as well as Rutgers University's Eagleton campus.

In 1824, Fairview became part of the township of Freehold. In 1881, the township of Freehold merged with Middlesex County to form Union County. In 1950, Union County and Monmouth County were merged into New Jersey as Middlesex and Hunterdon counties respectively.
