Fair Lawn, New Jersey is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,362 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest borough in New Jersey and the second-smallest city by population size in New Jersey after Paterson. The name "Fair Lawn" originated from two adjoining farms on which settlers set up their homes during the early 1800s. One of these farms was called "Farmington," while the other was called "Lawn." The first Fair Lawn post office opened in 1824 and was known as Newtown. In 1828, both Farmington and Lawn were combined to form Fair Lawn Township. At that time, there were only four residences in Township: one house at Easton (now East Brunswick), one house at Greenlawn (now Livingston), one house at West Milford (now Woodbridge) and one house at North Newton (now North Brunswick). During the 1830s, many farmers removed to Pennsylvania due to hard times caused by rising prices for corn and other goods exported from America. Many of these farmers settled around Lancaster or Philadelphia where they started new businesses or raised crops for export. Others returned home to establish permanent settlements around their old homes in what became known as "Old Lancaster." When it came time for new township residents to be registered with the government, few people chose Old Lancaster because it was less developed than nearby townships such as Southold or Millville. Instead, most registrations went to Township-held lands east of Interstate 80 near Hazlet Lake; these allotments had been purchased from Dutch colonists who had lived along this stretch of Susquehanna River before migrating westward during the American Revolution. In 1836, when Fair Lawn became an independent municipality under state law following a referendum vote by its citizens, it consisted of just five blocks - Blocks 1-5 - lying northeast of present-day Borough Hall on Long Pond Swamp land! Today those same five blocks make up nearly all that remains of Fair Lawn today - including muchBuildings dating back to colonial times have been lost over time due primarily to flooding exacerbated by coastal storms like Hurricane Sandy! In 1795 Samuel Sewall built his First Store on what is now State Road 7 near present day Weequahic Reservoir - later named Saratoga Avenue after General George Washington's troops encampment on July 4th 1777 during their siege of Fort Putnam across river from modern day Weequahic Park! That same year Sylvester Saltonstall built his Second Store on what is now Old Bridge Street between High Street and Spring Garden Road – later renamed Park Avenue after Prince George's County – becoming perhaps NJ's oldest continuously operated business! In 1814 Isaac Brock established a sawmill hereabouts turning logs into lumber which he transported downriver via boatloads intoPennsylvania until 1694 when rates reached $2 per cord! By 1835 some 60% of all Newark’s produce came downriver via boatsload throughoutMBTI&NJHW steamboats operating out of Trenton docks)! In 1850 Anthony Wayne founded Richland Manufacturing Company hereabouts spinning woolens & yarns into fabric for manufacturing purposes; he also sold milk directly to cowhands & Provided transportation service between Trenton & Camden Ferry landing!! In 1865 this company merged with Elisha Harriman’s Empire Cotton Mills producing millsinery fabrics!! In 1886 Anthony Wayne organized Newark’s first water supply system thru conduit located beneath Crystal Palace amusement park!!"
The town of Fair Lawn was founded in 1814 by Continental Army soldiers. The town grew rapidly, and by 1840 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1847, theFair Lawn Academy was founded, and in 1865 the first post office was established. The townsite changed hands several times before being purchased by the Township of Plainfield in 1922. In 1948, the township merged with neighboring West Orange to form Plainfield Township.
