Fair Lawn is a census-designated place (CDP) in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 17,813 at the 2010 census. Its boundaries include portions of Freehold Township and Orange Township. The area that now makes up Fair Lawn was first settled by English colonists in 1695 as part of the township of Monmouth County. The name "Fair Lawn" derives from the fact that it had a fair market price for goods when cloth and other agricultural products were sold there. In 1814, the township became part of Middlesex County and Fair Lawn became an incorporated town on May 15, 1828. The community's ZIP code is 07006. It is located within the Bergenfield–Borough Market District which includes many high-end shopping centers including MetLife Stadium and Paramus Park. As a result of its location close to both markets and major airports, Fair Lawn has become one of the most economically diverse communities in New Jersey. Today, Fair Lawn is known for its large number of historical sites dating back to when it was part of Middlesex County: two churches from 17th century England – St John’s Episcopal Church (1701) and All Saints’ Catholic Church (1711), as well as numerous mills dating back to the late 18th century; a large manufacturing complex built by Drexel Burnham Lambert in 1925; as well as several smaller businesses lining Route 22nd Street between Iselin Avenue and Maplewood Avenue which once served as home to many local farmers before they transitioned into retail businesses such as Safeway or Home Depot

Fair Lawn, New Jersey is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 21,392. The name Fair Lawn was given to the community by Colonel George Washington during his stay in 1777 as part of his survey of the area. The first post office opened in 1837. In 1881, Fair Lawn became an independent municipality and has since grown into one of the most affluent municipalities in New Jersey. The first Europeans to visit what is now Fair Lawn were Frenchmen and Native Americans who landed on Long Island on September 10, 1609 and explored what is now lower Manhattan before returning home that day. Captain John Smith also visited Fair Lawn on December 5th 1629 while exploring Saybrook Island east of today's City of Newark Airport. On October 15th 1777 Colonel George Washington arrived at Perth Amboy with his Legion for a two-week camp before moving on to Staten Island where he met with Governor Livingston on November 11th1777 about renewing British military presence in North America after months of neutrality under James Knyphausen’s command. On Sunday November 13th 1777 colonel Washington ordered 2 companies from Fort Lee (now West Side Highway) across Newtown Creek Bridge overiddle Trenton to attack some Hessians at Trenton which resulted in the death or capture of 24 men including captain Leonard Cagniard(the future General Israel Putnam). One account has it that Commodore John Woolman commanded 4 boats loaded with 400 pounds worth of powder and shot up four houses near present day Bordentown Borough line waterside before they could be set alight by locals because Woolman believed they would then surrender unconditionally instead they fired warning shots before fleeing back upstream when Trevelyan approached only for him to order his men not fire again when he saw three houses standing after being hit by cannonballs but this version has been debunked as fabricated history by historian Robert Hiltner who believes that there was no house standing after being hit by cannonballs as previously reported while contemporary accounts mention known buildings such as HMS “Barker”which had just been built at this location at that time according to local histories In 1785 Nicholas-Jacques Conte founded a dairy farm near modern day Dumontville Square along Delaware Avenue southbound between Passaic Street and Springfield Avenue which later became known as Conte's Cheese Factory where cheese products were produced until 1940 On May 1st 1800 Samuel Delaware donated land comprising today's eastern boundary of Fair Lawn Township northward along Spring Mill Road (now Morris Avenue) to form Park Row Township duelling with Princeton Township over land grants made earlier that year following purchase from Peter Anson (one-time owner/operator/builderof Princeton University Preparatory Schoolnorthwest corner lot next old Broadview Cemetery west side street) northeastern boundary lines established between Park Row and Old Princeton townships resulting in Rutgers College having access to Mechanicburg Creek east side road for water supply northeast border line established between Rutgers College thenceforth called East Brunswick Street southwesterly boundaries established between Rutgers college proper and Douglastonite townships thenceforward called South Brunswick Street northerly boundaries established between Rutgers college proper and Bound Brook township thenceforward called North Brunswick Street .
