On May 2nd 1875, the Borough of Fair Lawn passed a resolution proclaiming itself an independent municipality separate from Middlesex County. On July 1st 1902 Hurricane Edna caused extensive damage to parts of Gloucester Township including Fair Lawn but no loss of life or serious injury occurred within the Borough limits as such; however homes and businesses were destroyed or damaged throughout Middlesex County resulting in over $2 million in damages (this amount does not include damages done by Hurricane Sandy). In 1939Fair Lawn became part of the Municipal Division of Camden which also included Camden proper as well asnorthumberlandcountyandsoutholdestorknyacktownship
