Fair Lawn, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 23,821 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the five boroughs of Newark and its municipal corporation has a population of just over 11,000 people. Fair Lawn's ZIP code is 07609. The name "Fair Lawn" was first used in 1781 when John Woolridge patented an area that today includes much of what is now Fair Lawn Township and portions of Easton Township. The township was formed from parts of North Caldwell Township on March 3, 1814. The first post office opened in 1817 and closed in 1860; its last occupant was Samuel Tucker. In 1870, part of what are now Central Park and South Street were annexed to Fair Lawn as part of a land grant to Colonel Augustus Biddle Morin (1801-72). He had been instrumental in helping to create Newark's infrastructure including streets, lighting systems and a water system that became one of the largest in America. In 1906–07, during Mayor James Kelley's re-election campaign for mayoralty against Dutch Schultz,[1] Fair Lawn voters approved adding northbound lanes on York Boulevard (now Broad Street) between Saunders Avenue and Edison Avenue making it possible for autos with four or more wheels to enter/exit Rutgers University Medical Center without having to cross Mercer Street or go around Princeton Avenue which led to protests by drivers who saw this as an infringement on their right to travel freely within the city limits.[2] On November 5th 1907 Mayor Kelley received his fourth term as mayor after being elected unanimous with all precincts reporting following his victory over Schultz by 342 votes out 451 cast.[3][4] After years campaigning he won reelection 50%to 44% with 711 votes cast compared to Schultz's 693 votes out 2154 cast give him a two-thirds majority required for him to be impeached however no charges were ever brought against him[5]. In 1970 Newark merged into New York City effective December 1st[6][7], leaving Fair Lawn without any municipal services except police protection which ended on September 14th 1971 when those services were transferred back under the jurisdiction of Newark Mayor Hugh Carey who also served as Borough President until 1984 when he resigned due to health reasons.[8] As part of the merger there were many changes throughout the borough such as closing most public schools which left only four high school campuses open along with dropouts from these schools being sent directly into Rutgers University where they often finished up working jobs lower paid than their college preparatory counterparts sending tuition prices skyrocketing:[9][10][11] At one point enrollment at Rutgers totaled almost 4300 students while only 9000 residents lived within city limits making it difficult for businesses located close by like Brown’s Saratoga Farms shopping center which lost 95%of its customers due largely To rising tuition rates but still managed[] make a profit although not enough [] Overall this caused immense financial stress for many residents forcing them either leave or sell their homesringtonege took another hit losing some properties worth millions havebridge Road near campus became known locally simply as Bridge Road[] Civic life revolves around local governance where Community Boards (RBs), made up mostly individuals appointed by District Directors work together with elected officials representing each community ward within our boundaries - Mayor & Council members - [12]- overseeing day-to-day operations while also carrying out major budget recommendations provided by District Directors - ensuring that all areas are represented equally before City Hall
