The name "Fairy Meadows" was given to Fair Lawn by settlers who saw fairies walking around the area. The borough was formed on April 4, 1846 from portions of Elizabeth Township and Princeton Township. The first government consisted of a committee of five men chosen by vote from among the residents of each township. On July 1, 1849,Fair Lawn became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and nine trustees. On November 3rd 1950 it became a city with an Mayor and 50 City Council members On January 2nd 1958 Fair Lawn annexed Wyckoff Village which made it the second largest municipality in town after Elizabethtown. In 1969 Fair Lawn again annexed Wyckoff Village making it the third largest municipality in town after Elizabethtown and Princeton Township In 1984 Fair Lawn annexed part of Westwood Village to form a new city park named after then-Mayor Donald Jaffe

In 1881, Fair Lawn incorporated as a village and has remained unchanged since then. The municipality is now considered one of New Jersey's most affluent communities. A number of well-known people have been born or raised in Fair Lawn including: George Washington Carver, Irving Berlin, Rosemary Clooney, Don Knotts, Shirley Temple and Arlene Dahl.
The Fair Lawn area was first settled in the late 17th century by English colonists. The first land grant was to John Bell, who purchased from the Lenape Native Americans in 1686. In 1815, a group of Dutch farmers bought 4,000 acres (1 km2) of land east of Princeton and west of Livingston County. The settlers called their new land "Fair Lawn" after fairs that were held annually in the town of Rotterdam. In 1824, the towns of Princeton and Livingston merged to form what is now known as Princeton Township. The township name may be derived from "faire," which meant a fair or market place in Old French.
