Gun sights have been around for centuries, and they have a tangled history in Fair Lawn, New Jersey. In fact, one of the most famous gunmakers in America was located here – Smith & Wesson – and their pistols were often used by law enforcement officers and other members of the public. In 1868, Fair Lawn became an incorporated city, and its first mayor was named John A. Macdonald. At that time, there were only 6 guns per 1,000 people living in the city – but by 1907 this number had increased to 30 guns per 1,000 people. This increase came about due to efforts by Mayor Macdonald to makeFair Lawn into a center for shooting sports and target practice. During World War I (1914-18), guns played an important role on both sides of the conflict. The city saw an influx of soldiers who brought with them their firearms – many of which ended up being used in combat. As a result, gun sights became more common among these civilians than they had ever been before. After World War I ended, gun sights gradually fell out of favor as shooters began using optical equipment instead. However, they still continue to be used occasionally today as part ofgunnery exercises or target training

In 1824, Nicholas-Jacques Conte designed the first gun sight in what is now Fair Lawn, New Jersey. The design was based on a pair of circles that projected out from a central point. This created a sighting system that was very accurate and easy to use.
Fair Lawn is a borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 17,865. The name comes from Fairfield Township in which it was incorporated on April 14, 1837. The borough is located along the Delaware River and includes most of the southwestern section of Morris County. It borders Newark to the east and south; Milford to the west and north; and Paterson to the northwest. Interstate 95 passes through its center. In 1681, Jameson moved his family from Woolwich Township (now part of Camden) in Middlesex County to Fair Lawn because he felt that there were no opportunities for him there as a Quaker.[2] There are several sources which claim that George Washington also visited Fair Lawn during this time period; however, there is no documentary evidence to support this claim. In 1740 John Dickinson established a store in what is now East Flatbush Avenue at Market Square in what is now Fair Lawn before moving his business across river into Newark later that year. Dickinson's success encouraged other early entrepreneurs such as Nicholas Metzger (1735-1812), who founded Ferryport Tavern on Monmouth Street near where Interlocking Road meets Route 29 today,[3] Amos Kendall (1762-1831), who ran one of two tannery businesses open simultaneously on West New York Avenue and South Orange Street between 1802-1806[4], and Elias Putnam (ca 1768-1849) who opened a dealership selling new horses at Main & Fourth Streets crossingriver into Newark from Essex County prior to 1811[5]. By 1800, over 100 independent merchants operated out of Fair Lawn with total sales totaling $1 million annually.[6] The Census of 1870 counted 15 families residing within "Ferryport" or "East Flatbush" Alley including Nicholas Metzger’s four sons with their mother living nearby with her three daughters: “Kendall” lived opposite Metzger father Isaac Kendall’s house back then on Third Street NorthWest corner 5th street current location of Hudson’s Bay Company warehouse up until 1873 when it burned down [7]; five more children were born after their parents left but died young enough not to be enumerated below: Mary Ann “Minnie” Kendall d/o Isaac Kendall 8yrs old; John Edward “Joey” Metzger 3yrs old; Carrie Ann “Kitty” Metzger 1yr old;Rachel Elizabeth Putnam d/o Josephine Putnam 9yrs old all told sixteen children lived together then sold their share soon afterwards some leaving for good others moving back home by 1865 according to censuses only six households still lived here by 1880 due mainly due immigrations so few people contributed data here [/size][/quote][size=14pt][/size][/quote][quote=""]According to censuses only six households still lived here by 1880 due mainly due immigrations so few people contributed data here [/size][/quote] A local history book has been published entitled "Fair Lawn - A History For All To Enjoy". Fair Lawn is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 28,711 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Middlesex County and part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The name "Fair Lawn" comes from two small farms in downtown Fair Lawn which were used as markets for goods grown on the other farms around them. In 1824, a public square was founded in downtown Fair Lawn by Nicholas Greenfield and others to serve as a meeting place for farmers and other locals. The first post office opened in 1827 and was called Newtown. In 1868, Fair Lawn became an incorporated borough; it had a population of 10,000 residents but annexed neighboring communities of Maple Shade (10,000), East Brunswick (10,000), Rome Hill (8500), Kearny (8000) and Haskell (6000). On April 4th 1870, when Middlesex County was created from portions of Hunterdon County following the merger of those counties into New Jersey, Fair Lawn became one of its eight townships. In 1901-1902, during the construction of Pennsylvania Avenue between Washington Square Park and Fifth Street in Centre City along what would become Pennsylvania Avenue NW – also part of what would become known as "The District" – Fair Lawn erected a large granite obelisk dedicated to President James K. Polk that stands today at 12th & I Streets NW near Independence Hall National Monument adjacent to Ulysses S Grant Presidential Library mile marker 614bound on Google Maps
The town of Fair Lawn, New Jersey was first settled in 1732. It became a borough in 1834 and was incorporated as a city in 1915. The current mayor is Democrat Anthony J. Scarpinone.
