The name Fair Lawn is derived from English settlers' well-intentioned request for fair ground when they first arrived in the area in 1795. According to local legend, two farmers who were squatting on land that would later become Fair Lawn fought a pitched battle with other early settlers over who could lay claim to the tract of land. The dispute ended with one farmer giving up his Claim and moving away while the other kept claims until they both agreed to move out of the way so that others might build there. The first town in Bergen County was founded by Dutch colonists on November 12, 1714 (the day after Thanksgiving). On October 16, 1718 (also known as "Trenton's Victory"), General John Burgoyne led an army across Hackensack Bay and captured New York City during the American Revolution. For many years following Trenton's victory,Fair Lawn was part of Hunterdon County; however on February 14th 1834 it became part of Middlesex County due to Monmouthshire Borough's merger with Rahway Township and West Orange Township into Middlesex County. According to the United States Census Bureau, Fair Lawn has a total area of , all of it land. As of the 2000 United States Census there were 20,846 people residing in Fair Lawn borough. Of these 18% were Hispanic or Latino (of any race), making Fair Lawn one of its most diverse boroughs. As a result of its large population size and diversity living within close proximity to each other – whether through commuting or daily interaction – nearly all residents are familiar with at least some aspects of each other's lives outside their own homes."

The town was founded by English colonists in 1714 and was named after Fairfield, Connecticut, where some of the first families arrived. The early residents were farmers and traders who set up shop along the Hackensack River. In 1835, Fair Lawn became an incorporated village and then a borough on November 3, 1881. On February 14, 1915, it merged with Woodbridge Township to form Ridgewood Township. In 1714 English colonists established a community called "Farrell's Meadow" near present-day Glassboro Township in Middlesex County due to concerns about pirates operating from Barbados; however this settlement failed because of lack of water resources and supplies as well as internal strife among the colonists. A second attempt at founding a settlement was made by Captain John Smith in 1727 but this time he sailed into what is now Atlantic City instead of landing on Long Island and his 16 men only managed to build 10 cabins before being driven back by Native American resistance including Chief Pontiac’s band of warriors known as “The Indians” whose territory included much of what is now Fair Lawn today. In 1728 Captain John Smith again attempted to establish himself in what is now Fair Lawn when he landed on Long Island with 20 men but they too were unsuccessful due to indigenous opposition which had already been crushed by British forces two years earlier at Saratoga during the George Washington campaign against General Howe}. Aftermath of that battle led to increased tensions between Great Britain and its colonial adversaries resulting in increased military activity within New Netherland including recurring raids into New Jersey by Indian bands which continued until Dutch troops finally drove them out in 1664]. By 1800 there were over 100 settlers living in Farrell's Meadow [including 30 members of the Dutch Reformed Church] although most operated subsistence farms or leased land from local farmers]. By 1830 there were just 5 households left living there Exclusively from England] despite efforts by councilmen to secure more settlers]; however another attempt was made less than 2 miles away at West Milford so called "Farrell's Landing". This new community proved successful because it had access to good water supplies (the Hackensack) and close proximity to other settlements such as Woodbridge (to the east). Mellon Park (now part of University Hills), built nearby in 1892 after Mellon bought 320 acres adjacent to Farrell's Landing Creek (), may be considered one Of America's earliest public parks (). In addition, young adult males who enlisted during World War I served their country freely within Farrell's Landing since all male citizens could do so; many later became bankers or politicians ashore.] Although initially staunch Tories [most residents still are], many soon turned Liberal Democrats following parliamentary changes during Reconstruction period following Civil War][Although some remain Republican], culminating with incorporation into Bogota Township on April 12th 1920 ]. While still Borough status [it reverted back full timesharing hours later on May 15th 1970 ], it has since become an official township government governed through Mayor – elected every four years - with Councilmember position correspondingingly slashed from 24 member down To 13 members currently] .

In 1814, a post office was organized at Fair Lawn and remained in operation until 1957. The community grew rapidly during the 19th century as agricultural production increased. One of the first businesses in Fair Lawn was an Implement Shop operated by William Ritchie. By 1830, there were also two tanneries in Fair Lawn. The early 20th century saw growth in manufacturing with the arrival of several companies such as American Can Co., Singer Sewing Machines, and Winton Harness & Saddles to establish local industries. In 1924, Fair Lawn became part of Bergen County and experienced rapid growth due to its location on Route 12 between New York City and Newark Airport. This period is marked by several landmark events including the opening of the township's first high school (now known as South Jersey High School) in 1928, erection of a tower overlooking Interstate 95 north of town in 1951, and incorporation into New Jersey as a borough on December 3, 1970. During World War II, Fair Lawn served as an airfield for military aircraft stationed within Bergen County. Today, many memorials commemorate this time period including nearby Airpark 93 which played host to numerous fighter planes during WWII; United States Naval Air Station Long Point which serviced submarines during that conflict; and Battery Park Road which served as an evacuation route for residents affected by both hostilities and natural disasters such as Hurricane Sandy in 2012-2013
