In 1865, three men from Fair Lawn, New Jersey started a small business selling bipods. This was the first time anyone had created a tripod device that could be used for photography. The three men named themselves monopods and continued to sell their devices until 1876 when they changed their name to bipods. In 1892, another man from Fair Lawn started manufacturing his own bipods and soon other people in the area were making similar products. By 1912, all of New Jersey had at least one monopod-manufacturing business. The popularity of monopods led to the development of more complex devices such as tripods and dollies. Today, there are many different types of monopod based devices available on the market that can be used for a variety of purposes including photography, video production, surveying and weighing objects.

Fair Lawn, New Jersey is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Area. The intent of Fair Lawn's incorporation as a township on April 13, 1814 was to provide schooling for its citizens and to avoid duplication of effort that would otherwise occur when two towns - East Orange and Perth Amboy - were formed from portions of Middlesex Township. The first school in what is now Fair Lawn opened its doors on October 15, 1815. In 1826, the township became an independent municipality under the name "Newark". On February 11, 1937, it merged with another municipality - Teaneck - to form the current Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Area. According to The History Channel's "Middlesex County", one reason why Fair Lawn attained such notoriety during World War II was because it furnished munitions plants for both sides in the conflict and also supplied other parts of New Jersey with materials needed for war production. Today Fair Lawn remains a vibrant community with active businesses and excellent schools that serve generations of residents who have followed its traditions since 1840s.

Fair Lawn was founded in 1784 by the Morris family. The town was named for Nicholas Fair, a British general who conquered North America during the Revolutionary War. The Fair lawns of Fair Lawn are now part of the National Mall. The first settlers to Fair Lawn were farmers and their families who had removed from Manchester, England in 1760. By 1784, many other families had also moved to Fair Lawn and it became a small village with a population of around 150 people. In 1814, the village name was changed to honor General George Washington, who had been born in nearby Princeton. In 1849, Fair Lawn married into the Morristown clan and became part of that community. From then on, the townspeople began to build homes on what is now called Point Pleasant Road. New housing developments were built throughout the 20th century and into the 21st century; some still stand today including Hillcrest Estates and Deerfield Heights. Despite its long history,Fair Lawn has only ever experienced one outbreak of recorded racism – in 1923 when black students at local high schools were required to assemble in front of their white teachers for Inspection Day. That year, several residents complained about an alleged “nigger problem” but no action was taken against either students or teachers involved
Fair Lawn was originally set aside as part of Newark in 1698. The first European to settle in the area was Dr. Nicholas-Jacques Conte, a French doctor and member of the Dutch East India Company, who built a house on Fair Lawn Road in 1714. In 1845, it became part of New Jersey and Fair Lawn became an incorporated town. The township's first store was opened by George Papp in 1846. The following year, the first schoolhouse was built on Broadway Avenue. In 1865, Fair Lawn also erected its own courthouse and jail. In 1915, Fair Lawn annexed adjoining portions of what is now Edison Township; this made it the second largest municipality within New Jersey after Bound Brook Township. In 1924, Fair Lawn closed its only high school for students aged 10 to 14 years old and merged with Edison Township to form one large municipal entity once again - this time with a population exceeding 100,000 residents.
