Fair Lawn, New Jersey is a borough in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 12,822 at the 2010 census. The name Fair Lawn may derive from early English settlers' use of the word "fair," meaning "to be fair." The borough was formed on July 1, 1911 as a result of the merger of Plainfield and Westcliff Township. It is located northwest of Newark and east of Paterson. The first settler in what is now Fair Lawn was George Washington who called it "the town of Arlington." He built a summer home there in 1784 and many other homes throughout his life. In 1801, John Holmes bought land from Washington for $1,000 and began to build a new village which he named after himself - Holmesville. After years of discussion between original settlers and county officials about what to do with the area around Holmesville (now part of East Brunswick), a committee appointed by governor James Mifflin recommended that Fair Lawn be formed as an independent township on July 1, 1911. On September 10th that year local newspapers reported that over 2200 people had signed petitions demanding that Fair Lawn become an independent municipality. On November 3rd Borough President Charles Ahern convened a meeting to consider whether or not to accept the petitioners' request; only 30 residents voted against incorporation into the borough’s charter due to lack of support from outside organizations such as the Republican Party). This vote marked one step towards creating what would eventually become Newark – one hundred years after its establishment as one of New Jersey's 11 counties (it has since been split into seven municipalities). Ahern moved quickly to accept incorporation into Newark after he received assurances from civic leaders including Mayor John Lindsay that leading businesses in Fair Lawn would move their operations out-of-state if they were required to comply with state regulations governing business functions within municipal limits. The move paid off as business owners opened new branches all over Newark – including at Rutgers University where businesses donated excess space for research initiatives during World War II – making Newark arguably America’s most entrepreneurial city during this period. When taxes were first levied on property values within Newark inner cities like South Orange and Elizabeth (then areas served by Bloomfield Township) these taxes became known as “gentleman’s assessments” because they were levied only upon wealthy landowners while farmers living near water sources benefited relatively little from them (this situation changed following riots which broke out in Philadelphia following NFL football games played there in 1906). During this time also communities west of downtown Brooklyn Heights such as Morrisania started seeing large waves OF investment coming their way thanks largely to Governor Woodrow Wilson’s Homestead Act which granted citizenship to select groups Of American citizens who met certain qualifications including owning landfills or Idlewild Lake shoreline access rights NOTE: Although much has been written about this topic recently gentrification has accelerated dramatically across our cityscape particularly along Neptune Avenue & Park Row North where luxury residences are being constructed next door TO public open spaces) It wasn't until 1927 when developer Archibald LeRoy partnered with Captain Elisha Abramowitz Sr., patriarchof Abramowitz Farms marketing empire who controlled Atlantic City casinos such as Harrah's Hammonds Plains/Atlantic City Racetrack & Sunnyside Race Course etc., resulting in creation OF Bethlehem Steel Corporation HQ & massive redevelopment OF Rahway Mall starting IN 1923 which resulted InRahway becoming THE largest enclosed mall ANYWHERE ON EARTH! Over 100K jobs have been generated at Rahway Mall since then making it one Of NJ's Top 5 Employers!
Fair Lawn was founded in 1795 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte, a French trader and member of the Dutch East India Company. The original settlers were farmers who grew corn, beans, and other vegetables on their estates. In 1819, Fair Lawn became part of Middlesex County and was incorporated as a village. It reverted to its earlier name in 1875 after it became an independent township. In 1922, Fair Lawn lost its autonomy when it merged with nearby Paramus Township to form Paramus Township Borough.
