In 1687, English colonists began settling in South Brunswick Township through purchase from the Dutch: John Swartzendal bought 8 acres (3 ha) at what is now Derry Road and donated it to the township for use as a public school district. The first documented settler in what is now Fair Lawn was Nicholas Nicholson who arrived on October 10th, 1693. He built a cabin on what is now North Main Street. The first store opened in Fair Lawn on December 3rd, 1814 by Alexander Hurlbut with merchandise brought overland from Trenton by wagonloads; this became known as Hurlbut's Store. On July 6th of that year William Brown opened one of the first grocery stores west of Philadelphia when he located his business at Third and Market Streets in Philadelphia’s center square – just north of where Penn Station would be built four years later. Browns Grocery stayed open until 1915 when it burned down due to an accidental fire that destroyed most of downtownPhiladelphia during World War I. The building still stands and can be found across from Independence Hall Park today under new ownership as One Pennsylvania Plaza During Prohibition there was much drinking going on within town limits but no organized crime activity because law enforcement officials could not forbear enforcing various state regulations related to alcohol consumption which were then considered contraband goods. With repeal came increased regulation including prohibitionof gambling within town limits which led to some people moving out while others moved into moreBeer-friendly towns such as Englewood or Freehold closer to NJ Turnpike exits so they could cashinng gamescheckers without getting caught On November 8th 1920 local residents gathered around their homes throughout the morning after hearing rumors that sound equipment had been stolen from Rutgers University’s Studio Building near Princeton Avenue and Oldenburgh Road soon thereafter several businesses throughout town issued pleas for tips leading authorities to identify Arthur Fenton aka “the Poor Man” as the thief After much investigation Fenton was apprehended by police inside his home on North Main Street after walking out with three cameras hidden beneath his coat
