The history of target holders in Englewood, New Jersey dates back to the early 1800s. The first permanent target holders were erected on the present site of Englewood High School in 1826. By 1830, there were at least three such stands located in the community. In 1876, a new school was built and it became necessary to construct a stand specifically for shooting targets. This stand was located on the southeast corner of First and Cherry Streets. From this location, shooters could see their targets well within range without having to leave their seats. The next year, an all-new stand was built on the northwest corner of First and Highland Streets. This stand remained in use until 1924 when it was replaced by a new one that stood near the current high school campus. From 1925 to 1957, four other stands were constructed in different parts of Englewood – two on Pine Street east of Third Avenue and two near Second Avenue and Maple Street. All these targets stands served as locations for shootouts during various carnivals or fairs held throughout the community each year. It is interesting to note that although these stands differed significantly in terms of construction materials (such as wood or metal), they all shared one common purpose: providing shooters with a convenient place to hold their targets so that they could fire them from any distance within easy reach. During the late 1960s through early 1970s, several expansions took place at Englewood High School; however, none of these changes had a significant impact on Target Holder activity within the community. In fact, until recently there have been no plans whatsoever for either renovation or replacement of any existing structure within this historically significant locale! It is generally agreed that if it wasn’t for Target Holder activity at Englewood High School over the past few decades then most likely our town would not be what it is today! Englewood is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The first Englewood settlers arrived in 1795 and were led by Captain John Stevens. In 1814, Isaac Decker founded what is now Englewood Township. The township was formed from parts of Middlesex Township and Union Township on February 25, 1824. On April 14, 1828, portions of Caldwell and West Orange were annexed to Englewood as well. Englewood was incorporated as a Borough on November 3rd, 1895 following the creation of Bergen County by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. At its incorporation it had a population of 1,500 people; however this number rapidly increased due to waves of transplants from all over America who desired to settle in what had been called "the new England". During World War I the borough did not take part in any military engagements but nevertheless furnished many soldiers with food and shelter for their temporary encampments near Elizabethtown Lake which served as headquarters for American forces during that war. In 1922-23 Englewoods public library opened after years of planning by then Borough Vice President Mrs Jane Laddsberry; it became one of the larger municipal librarianships in New Jersey with more than 2 million items catalogued at its peak (it closed its doors in 2009). After decades of service as a cultural center for students living within walking distance of the building (especially through school libraries), on October 10th 2006 Borough Mayor Dayna Fenton announced that her plan would see the library demolished so that new construction could be undertaken on behalf of the community including parking and office space for local businesses; however Fenton later retracted her decision after community members expressed concerns about potential impacts such as displacement or loss of jobs should the library be preserved. Plans are currently under way to redevelop adjacent properties into mixed use with retail/office space while also creating a parkette adjacent to Village Green Shopping Center which would house civic events such as concerts and arts festivals etc.; both projects are expected to cost $25 million dollars combined though there has yet to be final agreement between developers/local businesses/Borough officials about exactly where those funds will go
Englewood was founded in 1799 by Isaac Brock and his wife, Deborah. The town was named after Englewood Place in Upper Manhattan, where many of the early settlers had lived. In 1819, Englewood became a township in Middlesex County. In 1874, it became a city.
