In 1829, John Dolan purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of land adjacent to Meeker's property for $200 per acre. This purchase created what is now Englewood Township. Dolan named his new township after himself – Englewoods signify both his Canadian origins and his desire to create a township that would be equitable to all its residents. The first real development in Englewood occurred between 1830 and 1840 when farmers started building homes near Park Avenue and First Street – this area now known as West Side Village. By 1850, there were over 100 individual homes inEnglewood Township alone! However, due to increased competition from neighboring municipalities during the mid-19th century – notably Paramus – many businesses closed or relocated within Englewood Township during the late 19th century & early 20th century. A number of notable people have been born or raised in Englewood including: American president Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), singer Gracie Allen (1915-1994), actor/director William Saroyan (1902-1989), boxer Jack Dempsey (1897-1976), NFL players Joe Namath (#7 overall pick in 1959), Larry Bird (#22 overall pick in 1969), Muhammad Ali ( Cassius Clay / Sonny Liston -Ali vs Frazier)—and current Mayor Ras Baraka Jr.—among others!

Englewood is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough had a population of 362 people. The name Englewood was derived from English and Dutch Englewoods, which were two villages in this area. Englewood was incorporated as a borough on December 1, 1871, from portions of Hackensack and Teaneck. On May 15, 1897, portions of Garfield Heights and Clinton Township were annexed to Englewood. The first residents of Englewood were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1795. They named their settlement "Engelandt". The original Landmarks grant for the town was dated February 15, 1798 and it included land east of Newark Avenue between Prospect Street and Elmendorf Road. In 1814 an act known as the "Annexation Act" granted all present-day Boroughs except Princeton (then part of Demarest) to form a new township called "Garfield Heights", with John Pohlen as its first Mayor. This act provided for increased taxation so that developers could build more expensive homes in what would become one of New Jersey's most expensive townships by tapping into natural resources such as coal and oil shale located near Ridgewood Lake outside Newark Airport. In 1886 when Camden and Morristown became municipalities within New Jersey due to mergers with other counties within the state, boundaries between our two municipalities changed slightly with respect to areas including “Garfield Heights” – still part of Morristown despite being technically within Camden’s limits! In 1902 when Morris Township was established adjacent to both Camden and Middlesex Counties following merger/division among those three municipalities also resulting from local government consolidation efforts triggered by pandemic-era hysteria (Newarkans had already begun moving out), “Garfield Heights” again found itself wholly withinMorris Township boundaries! No questions about boundary changes ever came up during those years because everyone knew that everything south of Newark Avenue belonged rightfully to “Garfield Heights”!!! even though at no time did anyone actually live there! During World War II much activity took place on Route 206 just northbound off Garden State Parkway leading into Morris County including production by Ford Motor Company at White Sands Missile Range; this area now forms part of Woodbridge Township
