It was named for Edward Englewood (1786-1863), a soldier in the American Revolution who fought at Monmouth Court House and Princeton Heights. Englewood, New Jersey is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City metropolitan area. The name Englewood comes from Old English words meaning "a wood near the river" and refers to a large tract of forest land that lay east of Newark and west of Elizabethtown before it was annexed by Newark in 1834. The first Englewood settlers were Dutch who arrived in 1664. They founded a small community on the property now known as North Englewood which they named after their farm home at Engelwood Manor in Holland Township. Unfortunately for the Dutch colonists, their new land proved too difficult to cultivate and they soon left for other parts of New Netherland. In 1797, British forces burned down all but one building in what is now North Englewood while under occupation by American troops during the Revolutionary War. However, despite this setback, early residents began to build up an impressive local reputation for their brewing skills and founding families such as those who would later establish Southdale Golf Course & Resort (1964), FirstEnergy (1982), and BNY Mellon (2006). One early resident even became a millionaire thanks to his involvement with real estate development: George Washington Carver Jr., who operated Carver's Garden Grocery on Second Street between Park Avenue and West Side Highway until he sold it in 1969 to Jewish entrepreneur Meyer Lansky for $1 million*! In 1834, when Newark was incorporated as a city, part of its boundaries included present-day Englewood including most of Elizabethtown Township which had been annexed into Newark earlier that year.* By 1860*, Englewood had increased its population by over 100%. With construction underway on the Lincoln Railroad station just across Park Avenue from where it stands today*, many new residents flocked to town seeking streetcar access or easy access to downtown areas like Market Square or Fifth Avenue†(*excluding Black Americans who still lived among Native Americans). Today’s largest concentration ofEngelwoods live within walking distance of both Lincoln Plaza shopping center (*and below*) and Park Ave.* (*excluding Stuyvesant High School*) while smaller concentrations are found throughout central NJ; some located close to highways such as I-95 orRoute 128†(*excluding Leonardo da Vinci High School*). The economic late 1800s saw EngelWood become increasingly industrialized with firms such as Bethlehem Steel shipping operations being established here beginning around 1900*. However industry declined after World War II with advances made in transportation technologies leading companies such as Ford Motor Company abandoning production here altogether†(*otherwise known as Essex County *) *.
