Englewood is a borough in New Jersey, United States. It is located in the Bergen County metropolitan area and is part of the Paramus–Union City, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 Census, Englewood had a population of 48,821. The borough was formed from parts of Rahway Township on June 15, 1911. Englewood borders Hackensack to the north, Midtown Manhattan to the east and south, and Union City to the west. The firstEnglewood settlers were Germans who arrived in 1814 from Hanover Township, New York. They built a log cabin on what is now Old Englewood Avenue. In 1819 they erected a large frame house on Summit Street which still stands today as The Summit House Museum. At that time Englewood was known as "Hague Township". On April 2nd, 1824 Dutch immigrants James Vandergrift and Jacob Beekman founded Griggs & Vandergrift Tavern in present-day Englewood with their families. That tavern became one of the most popular places for people to gather around Lake Placid until it closed its doors in 1906 due to Prohibition efforts by America's Republican Party%. In 1833 there was a smallpox pandemic throughout America which caused many deaths among humans and animals across many states including New Jersey; however no cases were reported within Englewood at that time because it was considered an isolated community located outside of any major cities or towns at that time. On May 6th, 1861 during American Civil War (American Civil War) General Nathan Bedford Forrest made his way through Englewoods streets leading up towards Rahway while being pursued by Ulysses S Grant's army following his victory over Confederate forces at First Bull Run Bridge on April 12th (1861). General Forrest chose this location due to its strategic location between two major armies making it difficult for pursuit or interception by either side; he also knew that if he reached Rahways Municipal Building he could gain access to safe communication routes within Union City and beyond should hostilities resume after his victory over Confederate forces." While living in Newark during World War II Allied soldiers discovered several underground caches of weapons and supplies belonging to Nazi Germany inside abandoned buildings in Newark before being discovered by local police who raided those locations also finding evidence linking numerous Newark residents named Richard Mengeldt (a key figure behind Adolf Hitler's attemptto launder money through dummy companies), George Maurer (manager of Deutsche Bank), Ernst Roehm (president of Nazi Germany's Radio broadcasting bureau), Fritz Kuhn (director general des Sicherheitsdiensts des Reichs Luftwaffe) among others." The first European settler in what is now Englewood was Nicholas de Courcel, who arrived on November 14, 1664, with his family from the town of Westphalia (now Hanover Township) in Brandenburg Province of Germany. He founded a farmstead called Netherfield on March 3, 1665; it may have been near present-day Englewood Avenue and Ridgewood Avenue. Nicholas de Courcel's son John had two children – Nathaniel and Mary – by his second wife Elizabeth Woolridge (née Carteret). She married one Samuel Bogart (1636–1714), an ancestor of William Bogart, proprietor of Hempstead Lakeshore and later Bogartstown on Long Island. Nathaniel de Courcel became a captain in the Dutch forces that fought against English forces during the American Revolution; he became seriously ill after battle at Monmouth Junction on July 4, 1775 but continued to fight until he fell mortally wounded five days later at Bridgeport Heights near Perth Amboy MARY NICHOLAS: In 1776 MARY NICHOLAS moved to America with her father & siblings & settled in Englewood where she met NHJ & married him there on May 25th 1776
