Englewood is a borough in New Jersey, United States. Englewood was incorporated as a borough on April 14, 1892, from parts of Maple Shade and Paterson. The population was 5,564 at the 2010 census. Located in Morris County, Englewood is one of five municipalities within the Bergen County metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Englewood were French traders sailing up the Passaic River in 1611. By 1672, English traders had established a trading post farther upriver at Newark Bayou (now called Hackensack River). In 1718, George Washington visited Newark Bayou and noted that "the water here is very bad for fishing." In 1734-35, General John Burgoyne's army passed through Englewood on its way to Saratoga Springs; during this time there were numerous Indian raids into New Jersey and neighboring Pennsylvania. On October 3, 1777, during the Battle of Monmouth Junction near Perth Amboy Avenue and Montrose Boulevard in Union Township (now part of Englewood), British troops under General James Clinton attacked American forces under General Peter Sullivan with disastrous results. American losses were high: over 100 killed or wounded including several brigadier generals and 10 major officers including David Twiggs Patton; but also British casualties amounted to only nine dead out of an estimated 350 soldiers engaged in the battle. After this engagement local patriot leaders met to discuss how best to retaliate against the Britishers who had humiliated them so grossly. They decided upon forming a provisional government which they named "New Yorkusky", after their now defunct provincial capital back home in Ontario (Canada). The name stuck around until November 9th when Patriot forces led by Commodore John Stedman plunged into Newark Bayou and destroyed all traces of "New Yorkusky". On December 11th Patriots burned down Fort Lee which was located just outside present-day EngleWOOD boundaries - marking what may have been the last successful action by troops loyal to America against organized British resistance during the Revolutionary War era. In 1807–08 land speculation began to escalate rapidly throughout much of North America due largely to concerns about potential gold discoveries in California – especially as Russia became increasingly interested in acquiring control over these resources following her victory at Borodino Sea Campaign on September 12th 1800 (see Russo-American War). At this time many people believed that if new lands could be discovered then wealth could be generated that would sustainable for future generations – thus motivated numerous individuals across North America purchase vast tracts of land which would form today's eastern borderlines of Englewood Borough: south along Old Bridge Avenue fromParamus Heights eastward until Route 71 reaches Lakehurst; north along Route 22 from Mount Laurel eastward until it reachs Bound Brook Lane; west along Bound Brook Lane until it reachs Paramus Boulevard/Route 21 intersection where it resumes its northerly trend towards Long Island Sound; while northwest corner parcel/block extending northeastward from Paramus Boulevard/Route 21 junction forms today's western borderline with Edison Township proper
