Nevin continued to be an important factor in community life until his death in 1904 at age 91 years old. He is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery #1 in Englewood with many other pioneers such as Christopher Sanger who founded Sanger Ford dealership there around 1896 which continues to operate today as part of Rockland Chevrolet Division across Hackensack Road from Nevin’s house.) In 1892, Englewood was one of the communities in Camden County that voted to unify with New Jersey. The city had been divided between Camden and Hunterdon Counties since 1784. In 1892, the residents of Englewood voted to become a municipality and this was followed by a vote in 1898 to annex neighboring towns of Weehawken and Saddle Brook. The city's first mayor was John P. Murphy, who served from 1893 to 1897. He is also credited with creating the first municipal court system in New Jersey. In 1902, Englewood annexed the neighboring town of Weehawken and began building its own infrastructure including a water supply, sewerage, schools, and parks. In 1907, Englewood became one of the cities in New Jersey that joined together to form the Metropolitan Council. During World War I, Englewood played an important role in recruiting soldiers for service overseas. After the war ended in 1918, many businesses closed down due to new regulations put into place during wartime times such as The National Defense Act which restricted factory production without government approval. However, due to efforts by Mayor Murphy and others within the community it reopened fully after just a few months hiatus. In 1933-1934,Englewood experienced some major construction projects including the opening of its first public library which seated 100 people inside an old mental hospital on Slattery Avenue; as well as new homes being constructed across campus including two high rises which remain standing today known as "The Towers".
