The Englewood Rifle and Pistol Armory was founded in 1892 by George H. Engle, who also opened the first gun store in New Jersey. The armory served as a center for pistol and rifle shooting, and later became a center for ammunition storage. In 1925, the armory moved to its current site on Elm Street in Englewood. It remained open until 1991 when it was closed due to financial difficulties.
Englewood is a borough in New Jersey, located on the east side of Newark Liberty International Airport. As of 2010, the population was 26,451. It is home to Englewood High School and Englewood Township municipal center. The borough was founded on June 1, 1917, by local farmers who were seeking to create an agricultural community after purchasing land from the state for what would become Newark Airport. The name "Englewood" comes from a combining of two words: "englez," meaning wood or forest and "wald," meaning place or tract. The original town site straddled what is now Broad Street and State Road 9 in today's Englewood borough; however most of present-day Englewood took shape between 1915-17 when developers purchased additional land east of Broad Street. During its early years, Englewood limited itself to small farmhouses with only one lane in each direction leading to their homes. The first store opened in 1916 at 3rd and Market Streets - later becoming known as “the old red brick building” - which served as the cornerstone for what would become one of the most vibrant sections of Newark during those early days. By 1920, there were four stores open in the area; three on Third Avenue north of Market Street (later renamed Grand Avenue) and one at 116th Street west of Broad Street which served as a distribution center for local farmers. With such commerce available close at hand, many residents began moving into the new community during its earliest years – including some who hadigrated from Europe centuries earlier! During World War II, much activity occurred within the borders of Englewood due to its strategic location midway between Newark Liberty International Airport and Philadelphia Naval Shipyard – making it an ideal spot for war production activities that included manufacturing goods used by both military personnel and civilians alike! In 1945, following world war II ended – but prior to any Borough Councilmember being elected – Mayor John Pate formed a committee headed by himself consisting solelyof business people interestedin developing retail space within the Borough limits within months timeframe! This committee recommended that all businesses should be given accessto public financing thru zoning amendments so that they could expand their operations within Municipal boundaries! Over time this philosophy has been followed throughout Borough history with various expansions/modifications approved via vote by Councilmembers…including annexation back into neighboring Willingboro Township following approval by Township councils back then too!). The first provision of the Articles of Confederation was that each state would have a governor and three members on the Continental Congress. On February 14, 1781, New Jersey ratified the Articles of Confederation by vote.
