Englewood is a small town in Ramsey County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 11,402 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–UMass–Teaneck Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Englewood residents were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1726 and named it "Engelandt". In 1814, a group of English farmers led by Colonel George Washington moved to what is now Englewood from Bound Brook Township. They started a gristmill and built a few homes before moving on to other projects. The first post office was established in 1815 and the first store opened in 1827. By 1830, the community had five stores, four churches and fifty-four homes. In 1846, when Englewood's milliner shop closed its doors after years of production due to competition from larger mills in nearby Paterson and Hackensack, its residents organized themselves into a political organization known as the Men of Industry (MIP). A year later they founded their own millinery school which still operates today as "The School of Ladies' Garments" under the name American Millinery Company (AMS). In 1861, when New Jersey seceded from the United States, Englewood voted to remain within the state but only received 1% of its vote in favor; however local sentiment soon shifted against secession and most citizens returned to Union lines.
