Elmwood Park is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,723 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Elmwood" comes from two places in England: East Elm Wood and West Elm Wood. East Elm Wood was near the present-day border of Burlington and Mount Olivet Township; while West Elm Wood lay within what is now South Orange Township. The first settlement in what is now Elmwood Park was made up of German immigrants who arrived in 1809. They erected a log cabin on the site of today's Congregational Church (now First Baptist Church) on Lower Road. In 1825, this community became known as "Bathurst". In 1837, three brothers founded the Cedar-Lumber Company in connection with their lumber business which grew to become one of the most important logging companies in New Jersey. The town was renamed Elkwood after them. The company's lumberyards were located next to where Main Street meets Route 12 today and continue to be run by descendants of those founders to this day

The name change came about because of the high concentration of trees near the former Hahnemann School for Boys which had been renamed Elmwood Schoolhouse in 1892 after its founder, Nicholas Hahnemann. Elmwood Park is located on both sides of Route 9 north of Newark and east of Elizabethtown Township. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , all land. In 1814, the Dutch bought 2,811 acres of land in Elmwood Park from the Lenni Lenape. In 1825, the area was renamed for George Washington, who had died in 1799. The first houses on the property were built around 1830. The first school in Elmwood Park was opened in 1834. By 1870, there were over 100 homes and businesses in Elmwood Park. In 1865, a post office was established in Elmwood Park and it remained operational until 1916. In 1870, a telephone line was installed to connect Elmwood Park with neighboring townships and villages. The first electric streetcar service began operating on November 1, 1902 between New Brunswick and Emerson Township. In 1918, an ice rink was opened in Elmwood Park by American Ice Company which is still used today as a skating rink!
