It is part of the Far Rockaway–Glen Ridge–Hudson Valley region. The town of Elmwood Park was incorporated on February 13, 1868 from portions of West Orange and Monmouth townships. The name "Elmwood" came from a grove of elms that were located near where the town now stands. The first post office in Elmwood Park opened on November 12, 1869. In 1884, Elmwood Park became one of five boroughs in Bergen County that were merged into its present form when it absorbed parts of HudsonValley Township and West Orange Township (both from Monmouth Borough). The current borough president is Joseph A. D'Angelo who was elected on November 3rd 2018

After Shields' death in 1868, the park passed through several hands until it came into the ownership of Edwin Greene in 1916. Greene created a large baseball diamond and installed a playground on top of his home at 111th Street and Maple Avenue. The park became known as Elmwood Hills after he transferred it to this address. After World War II, Elmwood Hills underwent many changes as families moved out and new families moved in. Some of these changes included the addition of a football field in 1951, an all-weather track in 1970, and a pool in 1978. In 2002, Elmwood Hills lost its suburban character when North Jersey Regional High School moved from its original location within the park to its present site north of Route 9 South (now Livingston Avenue)
