Elmwood Park is a borough in New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. Elmwood Park was formed on February 14, 1922 from portions of Orange Township and West Orange Township. It is located in the New York metropolitan area. The name "Elmwood" comes from two oak trees that stand near the original town site. The first settler to arrive in what would become Elmwood Park was Samuel Elmendorf who settled on a farm near where present-day Elmwood Avenue and Irving Road meet. He named his property after his family's home country of Estonia which he had visited while traveling through America on a business trip in 1824. A post office called Elmwood Park was established in 1827, and remained open until 1901. The first store opened at 2 Livingston Street in 1922; it closed due to declining sales around World War II. In 1928, portions of West Orange Township were annexed into Elmwood Park as part of the political changes resulting from the Great Depression; this annexation left much of what became east side of today's Boulevard (now Boulevard Heights) undeveloped. In 1951, when sections of Beverly Hills and Maple Shade were annexed into Elmwood Park as well, all three towns formed one municipality; this arrangement continued until 1972 when each town regained its own government under their own laws when Middlesex County was created.(2) This period saw rapid growth for ElmWOOD PARK with many new businesses opening up including several banks (First National Bank & Trust Company, Citizens Bank NJ., Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company), doctor’s offices (NewYork Hospital Center - now George Washington University Hospital), schools (John F Kennedy High School - now John F Kennedy Middle School), numerous apartment buildings and homes were built throughout most parts of town along with over 100 shopping centers being developed within a radius from downtown or just outside of city limits(3). Today there are still many vibrant businesses active within the Borough limits although some have closed down such as First National Bank & Trust Company which has been replaced by Wells Fargo since 1999 however they remain an iconic landmark within town(4).

Elmwood Park is a borough in New Jersey, United States. The population was 17,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Ewing area and is bordered by Camden to the north, Union City to the east, Edison to the south, and Englewood to the west. The name "Elmwood" comes from an old Dutch name for a wooded lot or plantation in that borough. The lots were first patented in 1675 by Nicholas Ten Eyck. In 1820, Rudolph Ackerman took title to 5 square miles (12 km²) of land containing what is now Elmwood Park from his father-in-law John Netherland. According to history books and other sources, Elmwood Park was founded on October 7, 1795 when General James Caldwell ordered one thousand militiamen and civilian volunteers under Colonel David Hunterto march through township on their way to help end a local uprising against British rule. The town was named for Mount Elmhurst which dominates central Camden County and can be seen from most of the parklands today. On December 4, 1872 Samuel Morse donated $2,000 towards building a school in what would become Elmwood Park. Construction began in 1873 but only two classrooms were completed before Morse donated another $10,000 more for construction of four additional schools that still stand today as part of Maple Shade Elementary School Campus located across North Avenue from Veterans Memorial Stadium/Barker High School on both sides of Interstate 95 exit 129A (now Old Bridge Road). On January 1st 1889 Special Committee on School Buildings met with Mayor Haddon Robinson who offered them funding for 12 new single story brick school buildings which became known as South Side Grammar School & Middle School Annexes; these two structures remain today as South End Junior High School & South Side Senior High Schools followed by West Side Intermediate Academy until it merged with Maple Shade Elementary on September 3rd 2002 creating one large high school campus with over 200 acres (82 hectares) . In 1896 Township officials voted not to annex into Camden because they felt that such an annexation would basically mean incorporation into yet another municipality without any control over its own destiny - something they did not want nor needed! This independence referendum led to much debate within Township government about whether or not Elmwood should become an independent Borough! Ultimately it was decided that incorporation would have been faster and easier so incorporation occurred on November 15th 1898 becoming difficult if not impossible to reverse due primarily because there was no municipal election then scheduled! During World War II many residents left their homes after bombings raids near Willow Grove closed their businesses making living conditions very difficult indeed some people even lost all their property including slaves who had been brought over as indentured servants however this information has since been debunked as false propaganda created by pro-war activists seeking political gain
The Elmwood Park area was first settled in 1684. In 1868, the township of North Brunswick was established and Elmwood Park became a part of it. In 1915, the Township of South Brunswick was created and Elmwood Park again became a part of it. On July 1, 1995, the township of Middlesex County was formed and Elmwood Park became an incorporated municipality.
