Elmwood Park is a borough in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. Elmwood Park was formed on February 3, 1868 from parts of the disbanded town of West Camden and portions of the township of Camden (both now part of Camden). The name Elmwood comes from an old Swedish farmstead called Elmgården. The first settlers in what would become Elmwood Park were German Catholics who arrived around 1795. They founded a small farm near present-day Goldens Bridge Road and Brushy Creek. Afterward, Irish Catholic immigrants began arriving in large numbers beginning in the late 1800s. In 1892, Dutch Protestants founded a church in what would become Elmwood Park. That same year, Scots-Irish immigrants also moved to Elmwood Park and started a brewery here. By 1905, there were more than 100 people living in Elmwood Park. In 1914, when New Jersey became an independent state, Elmwood Park incorporated as a borough under the new system of government for counties with more than 1 million residents. Through much of its history, ElmwoodPark has been majority white; however, recent waves of immigration have made it increasingly diverse as well as socially active community; today it is home to over 30% black and latino residents according to Census data . In 1916 Borough President John Cavanaugh petitioned the New Jersey Legislature to annex East Orange into Elmwood Park because many East Orange citizens desired to join their newly annexed borough too but did not receive any consideration due to then Borough President James Fenton's role as Acting Mayor while Mayor Charles Jaffe was serving jail time for bribery charges related to his prior election campaign activities ). On November 10th 1916 Borough Council voted 4-1 on annexation bylaw and Executive Committee Minutes show that: "After careful consideration all members feeling qualified thereto concurred" which resulted in "East Orange becoming partofthenewelmwoodsparkborough". The zoning changes that took place during this time reflect this activity with developers wanting increased density along major thoroughfares like Broad Street and Cedar Avenue being approved while maintaining older row house designs being disapproved or changed for denser developments such as "The Lakeside", which became one of NJ's most successful integrated housing projects . By 1948 when Philadelphia annexed West Camden pursuant to their merger with Camden (and all other municipalities within Middlesex County), many families who had sided with Philadelphia during World War II returned home – primarily because they wanted assurances their homes wouldn't be seized or destroyed by the city if they left again after hostilities stopped - but West Camden still saw some heavy migration thanks largely to job opportunities available right outside its borders on Willowbrook Drive (now Belmont Ave.). With Newark/Emmewoods expanding rapidly northward into east Township throughout this period ( paralleling Willingboro Rd.) few pockets remained unaffected by these forces beyond North Ward where dense concentrations of Italian Americans continued driving out sizeable African American populations . Elmwood Park was settled in 1792 by Abram Elmwood and his wife Sarah. The Elmwoods were the first family to reside in the area. They operated a sawmill and also raised chickens, pigs, and cows. In 1814, Abram Elmwood donated land for a school in the park. The first school was built on what is now Elmwood Drive. In 1868, the town of Livingston incorporated as part of New Jersey and Elmwood Park became part of the new municipality. In 1916, a community hall was built on what is now Roosevelt Boulevard. It served as the town hall until it was replaced by the current building in 1951. In 1948, an ice rink was built on what is now Roosevelt Boulevard near where it intersects with Garden Lane. The rink continued to be used until it was discontinued in 1996 due to budget cuts. A playground called "The Woods" was also built in 1962 on what is now Elmwood Drive. It remained standing until it been demolished in 2016 due to renovations being made at nearby Wexford Park which replaced it
