Elmwood Park, New Jersey is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the Elmwood Estate of 17th century Dutch settlers who named it for their home in Holland. The first Europeans to settle in what is now Elmwood Park were families of Dutch and English origin who arrived in 1683 as part of the Mayflower Compact. They built homes on parcels of land that would later become Elmwood Park Township and Huntingdon Township respectively. The area now known as Elmwood Park was originally thought to be swampy and uninhabitable because there were no trees or other plants indigenous to this area. However, over time scientific experimentation with saltpeter had demonstrated that this area did have wetlands which could support plant life (it is still one of the most salt-poor areas on Long Island). Consequently, in 1814 an act was passed by the New Jersey legislature which provided for the purchase and establishment of a township by lot within said county for settlement by Settlers Gentiles according to their choice; thenceforward called "Elmwood Park", after its purchasers. In 1838 John Pugh founded Pugh Paper Company located along Route 7 near present day Spring Lake Road/Route 22 intersection; this company became nationally famous for their paper products such as checks and money orders until1985 when they merged with Dillard's department store chain. In 1888 residents voted to incorporate as a village under the name "Oakdale" but due to lack of votes against incorporation a new village charter was not adopted until 1912 when Oakdale became part of Elmwood Park Township effective July 1st that year. On December 12th 1916 rifleman World War I veteran Augustus Kappar married his girlfriend Mildred Waddell at Zion Lutheran Church located in present day Maple Ave./Route 222 intersection; Kappar had been living with her parents since he left active service on October 20th 1915 while stationed at Camp Gregg outside Trenton, NJ following his discharge from Army Medical Corps unit No 54736 resulting from wounds received at Ypres ( Belgium) on April 9th 1915 while serving as Aide de camp to General Pershing’s forces operations “Tiger” including actions around Menin Gate."

Elmwood Park was first settled in 1768 by Pieter van der Sluis and his family. The area became known as Elmwood because of the many elm trees that grew there. In 1814, the land around Elmwood Park was purchased by George Washington and named "Belmont". barracks were built on the property in 1815-1816, but they were burned down in 1824. In 1830, a gristmill was built on the site and remains in use to this day. In 1848, Elmwood Park was annexed by Rahway Township. In 1860, a post office was established at Elmwood Park and remained in operation until 1903. In 1902, Union County formed and within two years had created six townships: Belmont (including Elmwood Park), Cedar Grove, Glen Ridge, Harrisonburg Heights, Maple Shade, Rahway and Springfield Township. On May 14th of that year, Elmwood Park township became part of Union County. In 1916-1917 when World War I started up again with new enlistments being called for after Germany beganWWI - many people from Elmwood park decided to go into the army because it seemed like there would be jobs back home once war ended so they left their homes behind . There are still some remaining soldiers from WWI who live here today
