Gun targets have been part of the Elmwood Park community for as long as there have been firearms. The earliest target shooting event in Elmwood Park took place on February 9, 1892. This was the first time that any type of firearm was allowed at the park. At that time, rifle and shotgun rounds were only BBs. The first real gun target competition took place on October 2, 1912. It was organized by Mr. John Ladd with assistance from Mr. Willis Higginson of Philadelphia. This event was a great success and helped to encourage other gun enthusiasts to come to Elmwood Park and participate in target shooting events. In 1937, the town began using fireworks as a means of patronizing their local Target Field Shooting Club (TFSC). The use of fireworks helped make it possible for people to shoot at targets during summertime evenings without having to worry about getting hit by buckshot or other projectiles fired from guns into the air. As a result,target shooting became an important part of community life in Elmwood Park! Today, target shooters from all over New Jersey converge on Elmwood Park each year for various events including NRA Annual Meeting & Event, 3-gun matches and more! Elmwood Park is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 11,898 at the 2010 Census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Elmwood Park was made by farmers who moved to the area from Hackensack and Perth Amboy during the 18th century. A post office called "Elmwood" was established in 1785, and remained in operation until 1865. In 1837, John Monmouth set out from Englewood and founded Elmwood Park as a settler's colony near where he had been born two years earlier on April 26, 1739. On October 10 of that year, Monmouth donated land to form Elmwood Park Township which became an independent municipality on February 26, 1854. A school for boys opened at Elmwood Park in 1848; it continued until 1965 when it merged into nearby Newark public schools. In 1915-16, construction began on what would become the first ever enclosed all-weather football stadium in America – Giants Stadium – which then stood as one of the most iconic landmarks of New Jersey since its completion in 1923. The park also served as home field for various other sports teams over time including baseball (the Newark Blue Jays played their inaugural season there), lacrosse (the NJ Devils played their first season there) and American Football (the New York Jets played their first game there against the Philadelphia Eagles). Many businesses were founded or relocated to Elmhurst Park during this time including IBM’s main headquarters from Camden Yards to offer employees easy access to central Hudson Valley commerce; General Electric’s main campus from Plainsboro to house research staff; Prudential Insurance’s main facility from Metuchen Junction to house corporate functions; Ford Motor Company’s headquarter from Bloomfield Junction to occupy an entire tract north of Center Avenue between Northumberland Avenue and Ridge Road Toll Road); DeWitt Foods’ new factory located off Route 202 just east of Interstate 95; Haddon Heights Elementary School built on land donated by businessman Samuel Kressin; Bedminster Baptist Church with its own gymnasium/fitness center/spa located within walking distance of many residences; Edison & Murphy Clothing Company - a leading manufacturer and retailer of sportswear - relocated its operations across Rte 202 south of I-95 concurrent with opening day celebrations for their new building adjacent thereto known as "Eddie" Murphy Stadium while local paperboys hand delivered newspapers around town on horseback while wearing colorful “Edison & Murphy apparel."
