Elmwood Park is located on the border of Middlesex and Sussex Counties. The first settler in Elmwood Park was Thomas Hews, who built a cabin on what is now Elmwood Road in 1829. In 1833, John Purdy purchased land from Hews and established the first post office in Elmwood Park. The first school was built in 1860 by Mrs. Anna Cavanaugh and Mr. Jabez Mays. A second school building was erected in 1896 by David Fenton and Mrs. Sarah Macy for the children of Alexander Macy & his wife Mary (née Nicholson). A third school building was constructed in 1907 by George Wickersham for the students of First Presbyterian Church. In 1922, when New Jersey became an American state, Elmwood Park became part of Trenton Township and its schools were merged with those of neighboring townships such as Easton and Freehold to form Trenton Township High School District No. 2 which continues to operate today as Livingston County Community Schools (LCCS). A fire destroyed all three buildings on Main Street near Maple Avenue on December 5th 1977; this event is still celebrated annually as "the day the trees burned". On October 21st 1979 another devastating fire ravaged much of the community when a gas leak caused an uncontrolled blaze that consumed over 80% of homes within one block east of Main Street On July 1st 1984 two bombs exploded near I-95 just outside City Hall resulting in death including both suicide bombers – these attacks are also known collectively as "the bombings" or "terror bombings." These attacks left more than 60% of Elmwood Park completely destroyed with only about 10% remaining standing by 2004 . In response to these bombings LCCS rebuilt most but not all demolished homes within six months although there remain many properties that have been reconstruction only partially or not at all due to lack of funds or political will among local officials since then . Nowadays Elmwood Park features mainly mixed-use development with several thousand residents working Downtown while smaller communities exist primarily around schools along Route 9 like North Brunswick NJ、East Brunswick NJ、Newark NJ etc., making it one of the most diverse villages located withinNJ
