In 1971, part of Cherry Hill Township (now parts of Southwark and Hackensack) merged with Elmwood Park to form a new municipality with a total population of 73,715 people. That municipality also included Glassboro Township (which became part of Camden after being detached in 1920), West Colebrook Township (which became part of Millville after being detached in 1908), and some areas within what are now Cherry Hill and Glassboro townships (including much of what is now Elmwood Park). In 1993, this municipality known as "Camden City" was renamed "Elmwood Park".[2] According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 21 square miles (55 km2), including 17 square miles (46 km2) of land and 1 square mile (3 km2) of water.[1] As well as being bounded by Maple Lawn Township to the east; Northridge Borough to the west; Glassboro Township to the north; Coleman Heights Borough to the south; and Paterson Valley Borough to the southwest,[3][4][5] it includes an inner core surrounded by outer suburbs: portions/neighborhoods within Maple Lawn Township include Rahway Village (), West Deptford Township (), Edison Plains ()[6][7], East Brunswick ()[8], Livingston Heights ())[9][10], South Brunswick ()[11],[12], Piscataway ()[]13,[14],[15]), South Philadelphia (/ˈsiːpətiːd limʒiwe/ [16]) [] - parts/neighborhoods outside Maple Lawn Township include Belle Harbor (), Elizabethport (), Blooming Grove (), EngleWOOD Place ().

The name Elmwood comes from two settlements that were near present-day Elmwood Park: Elmwood and Haddonfield. The first developers to come to Elmwood Park were John Purdy and his brothers. They started up a lumberyard here in 1853, which became one of the most important businesses in town. In 1875, they started up Elmwood Mills, which produced flour for local grocery stores as well as exports to Europe. The mills closed around 1920 but their remains can still be seen today at Noe Valley Road and Ridge Avenue. The second developer who came to Elmwood Park was James Cairdt Jr.. He started up Jardine & Cairdt Insurance in 1905 and it became one of the largest insurance companies in New Jersey. His company also built some of the earliest housing developments here such as Haddonfield Gardens and Prairie View Apts. Jardine & Cairdt went bankrupt in 1916 but their assets were bought out by Standard Oil Company for $1 million dollars so they could continue running their insurance business until 1967 when it too went bankrupt due to energy prices crashing! Their assets were then sold off again until its current owners took over it in 1998! Today, there are several large retail outlets including Macy's (the original anchor), Sears (which opened back when this area was part of Bergen County), JC Penney, Kohl's, Dunkin' Donuts/Donut King/, Subway/subway sandwich shop/, Foot Locker/footlocker store/, GNC (formerly known as Vitamin Shoppe)/. There are also several small businesses like dry cleaners, restaurants, convenience stores etc., which make up most of what makes Elmwood park an interesting place to live or visit!

On October 8, 1837, Elmwood Park was founded as a township in Middlesex County by the merger of three small townships. The new township included land that had been part of the former Rahway Township. The first town hall was built on United States Highway 9 near the intersection of Old Morristown Road and Elmwood Avenue. It was used until 1860 when a new townhall was constructed on Main Street in the center of town. In 1879, Elmwood Park became a borough and in 1898 it became an independent city. In 1921, it merged with nearby Rahway to form Rahway-Elmwood Borough. On December 2, 2011, it reverted back to its original name as Elmwood Park Borough.
