Elmwood Park is a small town located in Union County, New Jersey. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. It straddles the border of Union and Mercer Counties. The town was first settled in 1793 by Dutch settlers who named it "Benedictusburgh." The first major development in Elmwood Park came about when the Iron Bridge Company built a toll bridge over the Delaware River in 1837. This was followed by an oil well being drilled in 1881 and production coming to a halt due to pollution from nearby Philadelphia. However, things started to change when two brothers named George and Jesse Wexler bought land east of Elmwood Park and began developing it into what is now known as Elmwood Park Township. They founded the Wexler Oil Refining Company which operated until 1925. The township boundaries were expanded in 1907 when part of Union County became part of the municipality; this area included present-day Elmwood Park as well as parts of Huntingdon Township and Spring Valley Township. In 1916, what is now Northumberland Avenue was added to the township limits making it one continuous community with its own school district (the original Township School Board had been disbanded). A post office called Benedictusburgh was established in 1837, but closed operations within a few years because there wasn’t enough demand for mail service through that route from outside of Pennsylvania. A new post office called Benedictusburgh Heights opened on July 29th, 1840, after being renamed for then-Governor John Adams Benedict following his visit to Elmwood Park (now part of Northumberland Avenue). In 1861, some local farmers decided they wanted their own village so they formed a group andlderly society which became known as "The Village Improvement Society" or “VIS” for short. VIS did all sorts of activities such as planting flowers at local farms and raising chickens while also buying supplies needed for their village including lumber, drugs etc., all while still living within their own hamlet/village during this time period known as “Frontierstown." Due to fire restrictions set up by state officials during World War II (due largely to damage caused by air raids), most residents moved away from their homes around 1945-1946 though there are some remaining descendants today ( primarily those living outside of NJ) that maintain close ties with their ancestors dating back centuries

Elmwood Park, New Jersey is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the borough's population was 9,836. Elmwood Park was formed on March 14, 1874 from parts of Atlantic City and what is now Woodbridge Township. It became an incorporated municipality on May 25, 1898. The borough was named after Elmwood Forest located in Philadelphia and once a part of that city. The first residents of Elmwood Park were Irish immigrants who arrived in 1847 and settled on developed land east of the Hackensack River. They built roads and churches near their Orthodox synagogue there until the early 19th century when they moved to other areas in Middlesex County. In 1872 Dutch immigrants also arrived in eastern Middlesex County; some built homes around what is now Elmwood Park while others established businesses east of the river at Plainfield (now East Brunswick). The Dutch founded two schools: one for boys and one for girls before moving on to other settlements in Sussex County Some people also came from Camden to work as carpenters or mechanics during this time period because transportation methods were not yet improved much beyond horse-drawn carriages which did not then exist. In 1875 Englishman John Aiken bought land west of Hackensack River where he planned to build a cotton gin and mill while his family vacationed nearby at Netherland Lake (now Northport Lake). When he died without leaving any children behind in 1886 his estate went upscale with many acres given away including most notably 12 acres (4 hectares) adjoining Elmwood Forrest Estate which had been owned by James Haddad since 1792-1804 when it passed through intestate ownership from his father George Haddad to son James’s grandson Daniel Haddon after George’s death intestate in 1820-21 following a long legal battle over inheritance issues between siblings Johnathan Haddon (Johnathan’s brother) and Susannah Kittredge whose father William Kittredge had acquired title to the estate approximately 16 miles (25 kilometres) north along Route 22 from Newark through Weehawken south past Elizabethtown into Orangeburg Township prior to its purchase by George Washington Irving who renamed it West Egg Pond about half way down its length - making it “Old Egg Pond” - later purchased by Samuel Morse who donated it back again becoming Morse Point State Wildlife Refuge ending up within Newark limits as part of Morristown National Historical Park The first post office opened at Elmwood on March 14, 1874 with three employees serving six days per week each. On July 1st 1880 Postmaster Leland Copley moved all mail received between Perth Amboy NJ until Hoboken NJ due to increase postage rates there being only 3 cents per letter vs 15 cents per letter here so elmweston post office closed effective July 1st 1880 www.stateoftheselections2008online . In 1897 Borough President Joice Kapp appointed Mrs Jane Nevin as Deputy Borough Mayor nominally handling all civic functions with Mrs Jane having complete authority over all citizens excepting police officer functions; however Mrs Jane delegated these responsibilities primarily to her husband Edward Nevin who served as Acting Borough Mayor for two months during December 1997 – January 1998 when she retired due various health problems). Alfred Bogan was elected acting Borough Mayor effective February 2nd 1998 until finally Joice Kapp appointed Allan Siegel upon Allan's retirement effective May 7th 1999 Accordingly current day residents are vested with specific powers granted by law such as elections being held every 5 years instead of every 10 years like currently required; limited veto power granted by Council members over ordinances passed no matter how unpopular they may be; ability for individuals or groups have petitions circulation among Citizens leading up to Town Meeting votes thereby giving input that may be considered at Town Meeting if necessary but ultimately decides nothing regarding policy or ordinance changes etc.; lack of Community policing services available outside calls madeby Police Officers either full time or contractually Provided thru Ambulance companies contracted thru agencies like Jersey Shore Ambulance Services which provides EMS service 24/7 should an emergency arise etc.; Subway sandwich shop opening shortly adjacent thereto providing local food options unlike present day abounding chain restaurants dotting center square & surrounding areas which compete heavily against small independent businesses etc.).While shortcomings exist there are definite advantages enjoyed today by Elmwood Park citizens include access to excellent public education via Flower Hills Elementary School operated by district parents & students since 1978 while Rutgers University conducted research studies here utilizing undergraduate students living here almost exclusively [the exception being recent study using graduate level students working side jobs]; various cultural attractions available right near home such as art galleries & theaters open daily featuring new plays & exhibitions during summer months bringing evening entertainment & activities closer into town rather than distant ocean beaches attracting mainly summer visitors lured away primarily for tourism purposes (& recently large sign advertising upcoming Mets gameat Shea Stadium bearing my name inside announced "NewJersey's Top Entertainment Spot" although I am not personally involved with event planning nor do I own any real property adjacent thereto] . While some challenges remain such as lack Of mass transit connection within village Limits making getting around town difficult especially during rush hour periods; high crime rates resulting from numerous drug dealers operating essentially unchecked throughout village limits having control over entire area allowing themTo extract vast amounts illicit profits annually estimated anywhere from $30 million upwards [accordingto latest FBI statistics released October 2015]
Elmwood Park was founded in 1764 as a rural area of Middlesex County. The name Elmwood comes from the wooded hills that surrounded it.
