Elmwood Park is located on the southern edge of the township of Paramus and north of Livingston Township. It is bordered by Sayre to the east, Garden City to the west, Parsippany to the north and Haverhill Township to the south. Elmwood Park is one of eight towns in Mercer County and it also form part of the Passaic Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Elmwood Park was Isaac Engelbrecht who arrived in 1779. He founded what became known as Engelbrecht's Mill which operated until 1876. The mill built a gristmill which continued operation until 1862 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1819 John Fenton bought land in what would become Elmwood Park from Jabez Stone for $6,000 with plans to build a village there that would include a school and storehouse. On July 1, 1821, Fenton's Village was established as an incorporated municipality with John Aiken as its first Mayor and five trustees who were responsible for providing services such as water supply and lighting within the village limits On November 15th 1830 residents of neighboring Sayre petitioned then-Mayor Aiken to annex Sayre so that their community could share common borders but he refused because Elmwood Park had not yet been annexed into Paramus Township . On December 3rd 1830 after weeks of peaceful protests by residents of Sayre against Annexation (the incorporation vote had taken place only two days earlier) Mayor Aiken authorized annexation into Paramus Township effective January 2nd 1831 . In 1860s there were several requests for annexation into Mercer County due to land purchases or lack thereof along with growing population density however no absorption occurred because municipalities did not have enough money or authority to annex other municipalities without receiving consent from their respective governing bodies (the county government being responsible for both).
