Elmwood Park is a small town in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Elmwood Park is located on the border of Bergen County and Hunterdon County. It is bordered by East Rutherford to the south, Woodbridge Township to the east, South Orange Township to the north, and Hackensack University Medical Center to the northwest. The area that would become Elmwood Park was first settled by Dutch and English colonists in 1664. The village of Elmwood was founded in 1701 by Captain John Smith and family who named it for their home of Elmhurst in Middlesex County, England. In 1838, part of what would become Elmwood Park was included in West Nyack Township when that township was created from parts of East Rutherford and Woodbridge Townships. In 1858, portions of Nyack Township were annexed into Bergen County; however, Elmwood Park remained within Bergen County until 1911 when it became part of HunterdonCounty as part of a larger change in municipal boundaries which also affected other northern Essex townships including Teaneck and Northvale. The only stop on the NJ Transit Atlantic City Line are two stations: Newark Penn Station (NJT) on the NorthJersey Side and Emerson Avenue/Route 78 (HUDSON STATION) right next door on South Orange Boulevard inside Newark Penn Station's southern concourse - both close enough together so you don't have to step out onto either platform if you're looking for your train! Amtrak passenger service stops at Hoboken Terminal (JFK) adjacent to South Orange Boulevard as well - making it easy to get around without having to transfer! Elmwood Park is a census-designated place in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,549 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Uniontown Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Elmwood Park was first settled by Germans in the early 1800s. In 1828, three brothers founded a farm on what is now Elmwood Avenue and Prospect Street which they named "Friedrichstadt". The name stuck and the farm continued to be owned and operated by the Friedricks until 1914 when it passed out of family ownership to become part of the University of Medicine and Dentistry (UMD) grant program. By 1920, UMD had closed its medical school in Newark but also opened a research wing called "Medical College Building" on Prospect Street near where Elmwood Avenuenow stands. As Manhattan grew rapidly during World War II, many German American families moved into Newark from New York City or other parts of Pennsylvania to work in war industries or as service members. One such family was the Hecht family who bought land near present-day Elmwood Park from an Indian chief in 1944. The Hecht'stilted their home on what is now Euclid Avenue so that it resembled an upside down boat with two decks forstorage and living quarters for up to thirty people each. From there they started planting trees andlandscaping around their home which today forms one side of most homes in Elmwood Park adjacentto Prospect Street honoring their connection to Dutch culture while also enjoying some privacy due tothe tilting roofline). In 1950, UMD reopened its medical school after being closed for a year due to financial troubles caused by Korean War hostilities; however, this time only male students were admitted and all courses were offered jointly with Rutgers University since UMD at that time functioned as both schools within one large university structure headed by then-Chancellor Robert Hargrave (later Governor Christie). As Rutgers began offering separate programs leading up to veterinary medicine (later renamed veterinary nursing) starting at UD's School of Veterinary Medicine adjacent to ELMWOOD PARK HIGH SCHOOL®, much litigation followed as students seekingTo attend either program claimed priority over others attending similar schools located miles away like FAIRVIEW HOSPITAL® or PASSAGE UNIVERSITY® (both now defunct).
The Elmwood Park area was part of the Township of Paramus and was annexed by the City of Newark on November 2, 1911. On July 1, 1922, the township was merged with Essex County and the city became its official neighbor. The Elmwood Park neighborhood formed as a result. The population of Elmwood Park peaked at over 20,000 in 1950 but has since declined somewhat. In 2000, the population was 9,869; in 2010 it was 7,707.
