Elmwood Park is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is the second largest town in Middlesex County after Middletown and makes up much of the northwestern section of the county. Its name comes from Elmwood Forest, which once stood near its borders. The first settler was Nicholas DeBenedict who arrived in 1740 and built a cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1814, John Sweeny settled here and built a gristmill that still stands today. In 1835, Elijah Parish moved his family to this location and started Elmwood Park School. The first post office was established here in 1837 and it operated until 1865 when it became known as East Brunswick Township. In 1870, John Pappas bought land here for $2,000 and founded Pappas' Mills (now part of Teterboro). This mill operations were continued until 1893 when they were sold to J.P.'s Tobacco Company who then closed them down due to lack of business opportunities. In 1924, Jethro Gibbs bought these mills from the Tobacco Company for $1 million and reopened them as Elmswood Park Manufacturing Company whichcontinued until 1985 when they changed hands again and became part of the Metromedia Corporation which went bankrupt in 1995. At their height there were 300 employees at Elmswood Park Manufacturing Company producing cigarettes, cigars, lightbulbs etc.. Finally control passed back to Joe Gibbs's family firm which continues today as Elite Cigars Incorporated with 100 employees making cigars out of various types of tobacco products including brand names such as Montecristo Maduro cigars etc.. Elmwood Park is located within Colts Neck Township boundaries but has its own governing body called an elected board with five members appointed by the township president - one from each race - plus one woman appointed by quota for women residents over 25 years old living in Colts Neck Township . Borough services are provided by four full-time town officials: Mayor/Councilman; Deputy Mayor; Treasurer/Controller; Sewerage Director; Building Regulations Commissioner There are also six small businesses that provide essential services within Elmwood Park: three grocery stores (Gnome’s Market & Grocery store; Supervalu; Stop & Shop), two diner restaurants (Noodle Junction Diner & China Inn), twelve convenience stores (Six Flags Pharmacy & Exxon Mobil) as well as six total tractors used for agricultural purposes including eight dairy cows used for cheesemaking while four other dairy cows provide milk production Elmwood Park had an estimated population growth rate of 2% between 2000 and 2010 according to Census data while neighboring communities experienced negative growth rates (-5%.) This discrepancy may be because most counter-intuitively intended public services offered by municipalities like police or fire protection functions only operate within one specific zone or neighborhood while larger municipal entities offer more comprehensive services outside their jurisdictional limits restricting growth rates within said zones

Elmwood Park was established in 1838 as a small farming community by the Dutch immigrants. The park is named after Elmwood, a town in Holland that the Dutch founded in 1664. In 1881, Elmwood Park became part of Jersey City and was annexed by the city on July 1, 1886. The annexation made Elmwood Park an enclave within Jersey City and it remained so until 2004 when it reverted to its original status as a borough. The first residents of Elmwood Park were the Dutch settlers who arrived in 1795. By 1838, many of these settlers had moved to what is now Jersey City due to political changes that occurred during the American Revolution. On November 3, 1838, the township committee voted to name the town Elmwood after Holland's most famous resident, Count Hendrik Pieter van der Laan. At first this naming was only for convenience; there were no trees or other plants called "elm" in New Netherland at that time. The area around Elk Woods Cemetery where today's park stands was originally part of Hudson Valley Farms which was bought by Nicholas Simonsen in 1798 from his father-in-law John Woolley and his wife Catherine Woolley (née Livingston). The farm extended from what is now Fourth Street eastward along Third Avenue northward to Ninth Street near present day Weehawken Avenue and westward along Tenth Avenue to York Boulevard near Exchange Place. It included land between Sixth and Eighth Avenues on both sides of Third Avenue south of Seventh Streets on First avenues north of Second Streets between First and Second Avenues east of Twenty fourth Street. There also extending into Hackensack River valley along Tenth Street from York Boulevard to Exchange Placee (now called Market street). This acreage comprised about 112 acres including parts of present day Haddonfield Township on the south side of Eighth avenue west side (now Easton), Uniondale Township on Seventh avenue northeasterly (west side) side (now West Long Branch), Sayreville Borough on Eleventh avenue easterly (east side) side between Sixth and Eighth avenues northeast corner thereof with Fifth street between those streets - all located within present day Newark County . Nicholas Simonsen died intestate leaving behind two sons: Nicholas Jr., who resided at Hudsons Valley Farms until 1840 when he moved back home with his mother; John Sr., who continued farming until 1850 when he sold it for $1050 cash to another family member Samuel Heckerlein & Co.. From then onward Northumberland Ave ran through what is now Elmwood Park proper while Southumberland Ave ran through Hackensack River Valley which formed part of Northumberland County before becoming part Of New York state followingthe end of colonialism there in 1947 In 1881, as part of Johns Settlement process mandated under state lawisphere 2 c §2(a), all citizens over 25 years old were required to attend an public school district hearing held each year at least once during their residency period starting with Year 0 regardless whether they lived within our municipality or not – even if we resided outside our boundaries! So too did James Biddle whose property lay just eastside/northwestof modern day Elmwood Blvd & His house still stands today (& used for photo shoots back then!). That same year thru Chauncey Liscomb’s purchase from His father-in-law Phebe Liscomb (& her husband George Washington McLaughlin) ownership changed hands again with Chauncey owning more than half way up section 4th St NW towards current day Willowbrook Drive…This means James Biddle never actually attended any hearings LOL! But rest assured he paid attention every step OF THE WAY because education mattered THEN & DOES NOW!!! chauncey Liscomb passed away suddenly March 12th 1902 & left behind 4 children: James Luscombe b1879 d1948 Mary Luscombe 1901–1984 Franklin Biddle 1916–1999 Nellie Biddle 1942–1994 Charles Biddle 1946–present
