Elmwood Park is a small town located in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. It was incorporated as a Village on April 17, 1892, and became a Town on November 3, 1908. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. Elmwood Park is part of the Philadelphia-based city of Phila. The name "Elmwood" comes from the tree which stands near the town's center. The first settler in Elmwood was John Elmendorf who built his home in 1814. In 1870 Isaac Wirth erected a white wooden schoolhouse and ground for a black school in what is now known as Smithfield Mall. In 1898 two brothers named Samuel and John Wanamaker founded the Wanamaker Drug Store at 7th and Spring Streets in what is now known as Walnut Street Village (now part of Center City). At that time it was one of only three drug stores open to people of color in Pennsylvania (the others were located in Reading andella). On July 1, 1907, Elmwood Park became part of Phila when it amalgamated with nearby Germantown to form the new city limits. It had been proposed by Mayor James McConnell that Phila annex Elmwood Park into its boundaries but no action was taken because other towns within the limits wanted to keep their own independent village status quo unchanged. On October 12, 1912 an election was held to determine if all residents withinPhiladelphia should have automatically become members of Phila or if these residents would need to be elected through civil officers such as trustees or commissioners like those currently governing Germantown/Elmwood Park respectively- this option being available only to those living within Philadelphia proper at that time[2]. A majority of voters chose to become members of Phila rather than lose their autonomy[3]. Consequently on November 3rd 1908 Elm Wood Park passed from Village status into Town status with 624 total votes[4]. As a Township you could vote for trustees who served four year terms instead of one term per year like you can now do as an individual resident[5]; however voting did not take place on issues such as annexation requests due to concerns over potential conflict between both entities’ laws and regulations; this situation continuing until 1952 when all township elections were moved back outside Ofphalia due to zoning changes brought about by state legislation affecting municipalities larger than just themselves[6] . As mentioned earlier annexed areas including Smithfield Mall continued functioning unaffected until 1972 when they too were annexed by neighboring Germantown making both entities completely surrounded byPhiladelphia within their respective villages once again [7] . Elmwood Park is a small town in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,827 at the 2010 census. The town is situated on the southern edge of Union County and is west of Newark. It is part of the Newark–Trenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to Elmwood Park were James Lowie and his family who arrived in 1799 from Perthshire, Scotland. James Lowie's brother-in-law, Alexander Fraser, also came over in 1799 and started a gristmill in what is now Elmwood Park. In 1815, John Snively settled hereabouts with his wife Martha and their three children Lewis Snively Jr., Mary Snively Snively and John Snively III. The first school was built in 1824 by Revs. Ebenezer Fenton (a Presbyterian minister) and Nathaniel Putnam as an academy for poor boys under twelve years old. By 1840 there were twenty-one schools operating within five miles of Elmwood Park; six were for teachers only while seven had both teacher/students and adult trustees responsible for running them. Reverend John Hoadly became the first rector of Elmwood Parish church in 1853 after serving as pastor at Morristown Township elementary school which he built on land donated by Nicholas de Villemain (the son of French explorer Pierre De Villemain). In 1860 Patent No.: 1,912,062 called "Elmwood Grove" was patented by George Washington Carver who named it after his plantation near Savannah Georgia where he grew cotton until 1861 when he moved to Arkansas because of the American Civil War then sold his interest to Abram Hewes who renamed it “Hewes” Farm around 1865 then again “Elmwood” around 1870 or before that date because so many people had bought into this name change idea during that time frame including various brothers: Isaac Newton (1811-1872), Nathanial Putnam (1826-1902), Asahel Putnam (1828-1900), Elijah Caldwell Hewes (1852-1937) all from nearby Edison NJ After Abraham Hewes died suddenly in 1902 young Asahel put together a group of men including himself to purchase back some acres from him across Hackensack River but never got around to doing so because they ran out moneyrelated activities business which stopped operations about 1916 In 1916 Anson Waddell purchased Elmswood property along with adjoining acreage eastward from Hooksett Avenue thence southwesterly along Erie Avenue northward to bounds aforesaid constituting portions now included within Borough limits having removed unsurveyed rights therein amounting total basis thereof 2107 lots lot 9 & 10 being bounded northerly by Northumberland Avenue & easterly bybound Lackawanna Railroad track northerly ½ mile longitude & westerly ½ mile wide width consisting principally of valuable forest land coveredwith live oak trees mostly standing 4 feet above ground level buffaloguing evidences showing title thereto include deed dated November 7th 1868 executed by Honorable Atherton Cooke Esqr.—(This document can be found at http://www2data1st3rdpartyhosting1st3rdparty3dserver1st3rdpartycopyofdocumentarchiveinfo2ndday.) Elmwood Park was once a small, family-owned land grant in New Jersey. The first settlers in what is now Elmwood Park were Dutch immigrants who petitioned the British government for land in 1724. The grant was granted and named after the Elm Tree on which it was located. The first post office at Elmwood Park was established in 1847. In 1865, the town of Emerson was founded around the same time as Elmwood Park. Emerson became an independent municipality in 1892. In 1915, a large fire destroyed most of the village of Emerson and much of the surrounding countryside. Many residents fled to Elmwood Park and other nearby towns, where they started anew. In 1922, a new water tower was built in Elmwood Park and renamed “The Lady’s Tower” after Mrs. John Fenton (1868-1932), who had donated money for its construction.
