The first settler in what would become Elmwood Park was John Purdy who arrived there with his family in 1814 from Cherry Hill, NJ.. He built a cabin on land that he purchased from NATHAN SUTHERLAND.. On July 15th 1840 ELMWOOD PARK PLANTATION COOPERATIVE WAS FORMED WITH THE HELP OF WILLIAM KNOX & HIS FAMILY WHEN THEY PURCHASED A TOWN LOT FROM JOHN HENRY TOWNSEND FOR $1 PER SQUARE FOLLOWING A PUBLIC MEETING AT THE MANSION ON DECEMBER 8TH OF THAT YEAR.. HENRY TOWNSEND DEFENDED HIS RIGHT TO SELL AFTER HE AND HIS FAMILY PAID $10 TO ATTEND THE MEETING AS MEMBERS OFTHE NEW YORK STATE HOWARD COUNTY BUSINESS ASSOCIATION). ELMWOOD PARK WAS FIRST SETTled DOWN BY JONATHAN APPLETON IN 1837 WHILE SERVING TIME IN EASTON FOR ROBBERY.–IN 1842 WILBUR ADAMS SETTLED HERE ALSO.–WILLIAM BIRD CAME TO OWN AN ESTATE IN THIS AREA AGAINST PETER SMITH BACK THEN.–JOHN RANDOLPH WROTE ABOUT HIS HOME HERE–ELMWOOD PARK WAS TRANSFERRED FROM HOWARD COUNTY TO MORRIS COUNTY IN 1907.–IN 1912 JOHN RUSH GIVEN UP ALL HIS ACREAGE FOR $5 PER SQUARE FEES TWICE A YEAR SO THAT EVERYONE WHO BUYS ONE CAN HAVE IT.) "Elm Wood" likely deriveable from "elm tree", due to nearby trees being nearly identical (one might assume they were taken down together). There are several references throughout history mentioning an elm tree being present; it makes sense then that this tree would be named after/related to Elmwood park as well!

The first settlers to Elmwood Park were two families who arrived around 1795. James Fenton (1775-1826) came from England and his wife Mary married John Trimble (1768-1836). They settled on what is now the east side of Elmwood Road in 1795. Their son James had three children: John Fenton II (1800-1851), Sarah Fenton Trimble (1802- 1875), and their daughter Frances Elizabeth Fenton (1805- 1884). In 1814, Nicholas D’Angelo bought 2 acres of land between South Second Street and North Third Street in Harrison Township for $100 cash. He named it "D’Angelo's Grove". In 1830, he sold the property to George Brayden for $200 cash. It remained with Brayden until 1861 when it was sold to Cornelius Fitzpatrick Jr.. The property passed through many hands until it finally came into the ownership of the Trimbles family in 1914. John Trimble became a member of the township board of directors in 1892 and served as its president from 1896 to 1902; he also served as mayor from 1901 to 1903 and 1904 to 1906. On October 15th, 1907 an act was passed by the New Jersey General Assembly which provided for creation of a borough within Middlesex County called "Elmwood Park". The name change took effect on December 1st, 1907.
