Elizabeth is a town in New Jersey, United States. The population was 69,814 at the 2010 census. Elizabeth was founded by George Washington in 1784 and became part of the United States in 1790. It is named after Elizabeth City, Virginia, where Washington died in 1799. The first white settler in Elizabeth was John Pemberton and his family who arrived around 1686. They were followed by other English settlers such as Isaac Brock and John Hackett who each built a small cabin and raised crops until about 1700 when disease brought about a large exodus of English-speaking people to Canada. Hudson's Bay Company traders soon started trading with the local Indians, which led to increased Indian raids on British settlements throughout this period. One of the early pioneers in Elizabeth was Nicholas de Burgh who arrived here around 1801 with his family from Scotland settling near what is now called Market Street. He began farming while also working for the New Jersey Central Railroad company completing surveys for its line between Newark and Trenton before starting his own business importing goods from Europe overland to NJC&R terminals at Rahway Junction and Secaucus Junction. In 1825 he married Jane Rogers (daughter of nearby developer James Rogers) and their son Nicholas eventually bought out de Burgh's interest leavingElizabeth as an all-Indian township by deed dated November 3, 1830 from Nicholas de Burgh to any person or persons interested therein! This means that not only did Elizabeth become part of the US but it also belonged to its first Indian owner! The Temperance Movement gained momentum during this time with many Quakers moving intoElizabethtown Heights area seeking spiritual guidance following religious conversions among early American colonists fleeing religious persecution back home including Baptists (1793), Methodist Episcopalians (1812), Presbyterians (1815), Congregationalists (1816), Jews (1795) etc etc.. On October 15, 1834 one such campaign resulted in an armed standoff between angry Delaware County residentsand pro- temperance forces at what is now known as "Olde Hickory House" located on West Main Street which ended peacefully when Sheriff Lucius Willard walked into the house brandishing a gun after receiving reports that several men had broken into homes across Delaware County resulting in numerous injuries!!! This event signaledthe end days for pro-temperance sentiment within northeastern Pennsylvania as well as much OFA activity here especially afterwards !! In 1840 new township boundaries were established enlarging existingElizabethtown Heights area northward beyondpresentday Midvale Avenue intersection thereby constituting what are now East Brunswick Township & East Orange Township!!! In 1851 original proprietors thereof divided their lands among themselves creatingMiddletown Township with portions going to Asbury Park & Princeton while remainderwenttoEast Brunswick Township & Midvale Avenue intersection !! By 1870 therewereover68000 people livinginElizabethtown BoroughSNJUSA claiming more than halfofNewJerseyVotersRegisteredHere IN 1860!! The history of Elizabeth began with its location on what is today known as Bound Brook Canal. At first, the town consisted of only a few homes and businesses. But within a few years, work started on building homes and businesses near where present day Market Street meets Bound Brook Canal. In 1664, when English colonists first arrived in New Jersey they were faced with many difficult challenges such as having to find land which had not been claimed by other European nations and then having to build roads and bridges across rivers without permits from authorities back in England. But despite these difficulties, early settlers quickly banded together to create an agrarian society based on raising crops and livestock for their own needs rather than selling them or exchanging goods with others. In 1702-1703 two groups of immigrants from Ireland decided to settle in what would become Elizabethtown Township along Bound Brook Canal (now Market Street). These immigrants were known as "The Founders" because they were instrumental in helping shape the community that would soon be called Elizabethtown proper – one of America’s earliest planned townships (it was established about 1702). Over time more Irish immigrants came but it wasn't until 1760 that all five villages which made up Elizabethtown Township united under one roof so they could start buying property together! During the Revolutionary War (1775-1783),Elizabeth played an important role in defending against British forces during raids into our state from Canada side by side with fellow Patriot Newark (then West Orange).
