As early as 1695 locals were using Indian word eelah for "township" because it lay between two other settlements: Weston and Burlington Township (now called Vineland). In 1764 John Thorpe built a mill on Mill Creek north-east of what is now downtownElizabeth; this mill did not survive into the 19th century. In 1825 local resident Amos Pond donated land east of where Main Street now stands to form what is now Prospect Park; Pond also donated land west of Prospect Park to make way for a public square which remains today known as First Day's Ground. In 1868 residents petitioned township leaders to form a boroughs within their current borders; after deliberations they granted this petition on February 2nd 1869 and incorporation followed three weeks later on March 14th under the name “East Brunswick Township” with Amos Pond as its first mayor."
