In 1857, America’s first firearms-related apparel store opened in Elizabeth, New Jersey. The store was established by Nicholas Metz and his brother Julius Metz, who were both gunsmiths. At the time, firearm ownership was a very taboo subject in America. In order to evade government regulation, the Metzes decided to sell their entire inventory of firearms at one time – an incredibly risky move that led to them being investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice for violating federal law. The store continued to be successful until 1957 when it closed its doors due to financial difficulties. However, the legacy of the Metzes remains long and influential in Elizabeth’s history – they are considered founding fathers of the town and have been credited with helping create centralia (a neighborhood in Elizabeth) as well as helping spark the development of Elizabeth City County (now Camden County).

Elizabeth was created in 1753 as a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey. It served as the capital of New Jersey from 1784 to 1785 and again from 1801 to 1802. Elizabeth became an incorporated city on February 14, 1898. The population of Elizabeth was 72,813 at the 2010 census. The town of Elizabeth was founded by George Washington in 1753 on the east bank of the Raritan River north of where Newark now stands. Washington named it for his daughter, Elizabeth (1722-1796). He also built a small house there for himself and his family. After he died in 1799, his widow Mary Washington continued to live there until her death in 1814. In 1800, after years of deliberations among state legislators, the state legislature voted to move the capital from Princeton to Elizabeth because Philadelphia had become too large and noisy for its own citizens and too expensive to maintain. The first meeting of the City Council occurred on February 14, 1998 when it voted 3-0 to makeElizabeth an incorporated city with a mayor and five council members instead of just two mayors and three council members as before. The growth of Elizabeth led to several problems that continue today: traffic congestion is one; lack of public transportation makes it difficult for many people to get around; high levels of pollution caused by industry have made it difficult for people to breathe clean air; while housing prices have gone up relatively faster than average across most U.S cities, they are still lower than what is available in most developed countries such as London or Paris
Elizabeth was founded in 1634 by Puritans from England. The town rapidly grew and became a center for trade and industry. Elizabeth became an important stop on the New Jersey Railroad, which helped make the town a major financial center. In 1876, the city of Elizabeth was incorporated as a borough. The borough continued to grow and become more popular until it merged with neighboring Paramus in 1998.
