Elizabeth, New Jersey is a city in and the county seat of Mercer County, New Jersey. The population was 59,879 as of the 2010 census. Elizabeth is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in United States. Elizabeth was founded by English colonists in 1764 as a small fishing village on the south bank of the Monmouth River. The original town name was Westville, but it was renamed after King George II's daughter, Princess Elizabeth (1737-1814). The city boundaries were expanded to include present-day East Brunswick Township in 1881 and all of Camden County in 1908. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Mercer County in 1764 when Major John Woolley and his detachment traveled downriver from Newark to establish ferry service between Burlington and Perth Amboy. They named their new settlement "Westville" after King George II's daughter, who they hoped would inspire emulation among her brother's subjects back at home. However, little happened at Westville until 1768 when Captain James Cook discovered while sailing along the same river that there were valuable saltpeter mines located nearby. Cook mapped out a road from his discovery point near Perth Amboy to Westville so that others could find out about these mines and begin mining for saltpeter too. In 1776, Captain William Kneeland established a store at what is now South Bloomfield Avenue near where Main Street crosses over Route 9E into Elizabethtown borough today; this became one of the first stores open on American soil catering exclusively to Europeans during this time period In 1801–02 three hundred acres (1 km²) of land around present-day Elizabeth were purchased by General John Burgoyne from Jonas Weequahicq for $10 per acre ($140 per km²). Burgoyne had been appointed commander of American forces defending Canada against British invaders during Queen Anne's War (1757-63). He decided to move his troops northeastward towards Pennsylvania rather than risk another war with Great Britain On October 20th, 1802 Governor Tryon announced plans for an eastern extension of Manhattan called Rushmore Park which included building several thousand feet (250 m) high walls around its perimeter including a ditch 300 feet wide (100 m), called Canisteo Creek because it guarded against French Canadian invasions across the river valley upstream from where Fort York stood today In 1803 General Burgoyne ordered Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Brockett to lead an expedition up Canisteo Creek under cover of darkness to determine whether or not there was any land available for purchase adjacent to Rushmore Park; upon arriving at what is now Don Mills Road he found only swampy ground suitable for farming . After returning home with evidence that no such land existed he returned again two weeks later with five men under command including himself – thus beginning North America's first military reconnaissance mission The area surrounding present day Elizabeth served as part of confiscated Native Indian territory followingRevolutionary War Battle Of Saratoga which ended British control over New England . On November 12th 1800 Lieutenant Colonel Robert Howe led 10 militiamen intoElizabethtown square against about 50 Native Americans armed with bows and arrows who laid down their arms after being warned off by Captains Howe and Major Gorham Two days later Howe withdrew his force without achieving anything other than minor damage to some homes while leaving more than 100 Indians dead or captured including Chief Powhatan who lived nearby On December 6th 1800 Captain Gorham killed 15 unarmed Indians while taking them prisoner east sideof Mill Dam Bridge just beyond modern day Washington Boulevard on Long Island
