Eatontown was a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. It was located on the south bank of the Raritan River. The town center was along Main Street and included three churches—Anglican, Methodist, and Baptist. The first settler in Eatontown was Nicholas DePamphile, who arrived around 1750. In 1814, John Morrill founded the Village of Eatontown on a tract of land he had purchased from the natives. In 1820, artist Augustus Saint-Gaudens moved to Eatontown from nearby Middletown and started a art colony called "The Studio." In 1830, another artist named Solomon Guggenheim moved to Eatontown and continued to live there until his death in 1904. At its peak in the 1920s, EatontOWN had about 2200 residents. However, by 1930 it had shrunk to about 1000 people due to rising crime rates and poverty. When Newark became an independent city in 1947, it took over many of the functions of Middlesex County government such as education and social services such as housing assistance for the poor. Consequently, much of what is now known about Eatontown's history comes from documentary evidence provided by Newark city officials during their time in office.
Eatontown was founded in 1795 by Nathaniel Greene and his wife, Rebecca. The first post office in the town was established in 1812. By 1870, the population of Eatontown had reached 2,500. In 1872, the Erie Railroad arrived in Eatontown and began to provide transportation for people and goods. The town grew rapidly and by 1888 it had a population of 10,000. In 1893, the Citizens Bank was built and became one of the most important banks in Eatontown. The town also developed into a major agricultural center with production of fruits, vegetables, dairy products and other goods. In 1935-1936, during World War II, many American servicemen who were stationed in New Jersey moved to Eatontown to work on military bases or businesses. During this time period there were a number of military installations located within or nearEatontown including Fort Monmouth (now Monmouth County Correctional Facility) and Elizabeth Air Force Base
