Eatontown is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,023 at the 2010 census. The name comes from English meaning "the fork in the road". The first Europeans to explore and settle Eatontown were Dutch colonists who arrived there in 1664. They named it "Hempstead", after a nearby meadow where they found Hempsteed grass (Glycerolum hirsutum). In 1795, the French built Fort Duquesne on the site of what is now Borough Hall. In 1814, with the acquisition of the whole area by New York from France as part of the Treaty of Paris following Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo, Eatontown became part of New York City and its then-new seaport town status. During World War II, while parts of Monmouth County were under military occupation by Japan and other Axis Powers, Eatontown was an important shipping center for munitions exports to those countries and also processed food for Allied forces. In 1951, when New Jersey transitioned from a state to an federation under the new system known as United States Of America, Eatontown became one of its five towns within Monmouth County. By 1984, however, many businesses had closed down or moved away due to competition from more centralized cities like Plainfield and Neptune Township; so much so that Eatontown’s only real store remained its post office until 1996 when it closed again due to lack of customers. But with increasing development around it – including growth in housing – EatontOWN has slowly been reborn as a vibrant community full of culture and commerce. Eatontown was first settled in 1814 by Dutch farmers. The town and its surrounding farms were named after the Forks of the Delaware River, which are about 20 miles east of the town. In 1845, an act was passed by the New Jersey Legislature to grant township status to Eatontown. The township was created from part of Trenton Township and had a population of about 350 people. The first store in Eatontown opened in 1847. In 1860, a steamboat called the "Estate" left from Newark and arrived at the port of Eatontown for supplies; it is said that one hundred passengers boarded. In 1865, a post office was established at Eatontown with Prentiss Hargrave as first Postmaster. That same year, John Larkin opened a grocery store in what is now known as Main Street. By 1870, there were five stores in Eatontown and six inhabitants. In 1881, Jethro Grimes built a sawmill on White Sands Road and began producing lumber for local homes and businesses. In 1902, two men named Harry Wessels started operating a bakery on Old Bridge Road; they soon moved to new premises on Elm Street where they operated until their death in 1951 (the old bakery building still stands). The town's first water system was built in 1908; residents used private wells until 1922 when municipal services became available through public works crews. The town reached peak population around 1930 with over 1,000 people living there; however by 1940 only 500 people remained – mostly retirees from nearby towns such as Trenton and Camden who had relocated to nearby developments such as Elizabeth City or Morristown because of bad economic times whileEatontOWN remained little more than an agricultural community with few commercial enterprises other than grocery stores serving mainly rural residents
