It was in 1892 when Eatontown, New Jersey became the home of one of the first optical companies. Dr. John Prentice started his business by manufacturing eyeglasses and sunglasses in a small storefront on Market Street. By 1919, he had moved to a larger building on Main Street and began to produce high-quality spectacles, binoculars, and microscopes. The company prospered until the early 1960s when it was destroyed by a fire. In its place arose another optical company, The Optical Company of America (OICA), which continues to manufacture high-quality products today.

Eatontown is a town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,479 at the 2010 census. As of the 2017 United States Census, it had a population of 10,595. The name "Eatontown" is derived from English settlers who arrived in 1764 and named their community after the Isle of Wight off the coast of England. The first Europeans to settle in what is now Eatontown were Dutch immigrants who landed there in 1663. They named their community Nieuwpoort (New Port) because they wanted to avoid confusion with nearby Paramus which was then known as Orangeport. The first European settler in what is now Eatontown was Pieter Bakelius who arrived on May 18, 1676 and established a farm on the present site of Main Street and State Road 11. He also built a log cabin which still stands on Meeting House Lane today. In 1764, Englishmen led by Nathaniel Hackett came ashore from ship "Nathaniel" and renamed their new town Ashington after Haughton Hall near Amersham, Buckinghamshire, England where they had been staying for some time while exploring America's new world for fresh land grants. George Washington was so impressed by this early effort by English colonists to establish self-sufficient communities that he ordered all posts throughout British North America be renamed after him – including Ashington in Virginia (1785), Kingston upon Hull (1793), Baltimore (1802), Portsmouth (1807), Halifax (1809), and finally Philadelphia (1830). The first town meeting held in what is now Eatontown took place on October 12th, 1794 under the presidency of John Thornton Jr.. At that meeting it was decided to build a courthouse on Meeting House Lane and rename it “Chambersburg” after President George Washington’s mother Martha Washington’s birthplace Maidenhead near Reading, Berkshire UK where she grew up before moving with her family to Maryland when she married Thomas Jefferson Sr.. In 1813 Chambersburg became part of Yorktown Township when that township was formed from parts of Monmouth County and Burlington County following the merger of those two counties into Bergen County. Heatonville began dating back to 1797 when three Chinese men working for an American merchant ship called “Lingnanese Lady” set up a small settlement about four miles northwest of where Main Street meets Route 11 today just south of Exit 8A off Interstate 95 Pennsylvania Avenue exit ramp for I-95 / US 1 / NJ 66 . They called themselves the Canton seamen because they could speak only Mandarin but most everyone else spoke English so they were thought to be aliens! This small community attracted few people other than Chinese sailors until 1800 when Reconstruction Era Americans started arriving here looking for work during the Morrill Act period following American victory over France at Saratoga Creek which ended French control over New Jersey soil east of Princeton Junction which included much or all modern day Eatontown including Quaker City located north along I-95exit ramp off exit 8A NJ Turnpike

Eatontown was founded in 1877 by the Holland family. The town was named after a smallreek that flows through the neighborhood. The first store in Eatontown opened its doors in 1877. At that time, it was the only grocery store in town and it served as the town's primary source of income. The Holland family continued to operate their business until 1978 when they sold it to the Pritchett family. Since then, Eatontown has undergone several changes, most notably when the township became an incorporated municipality in 1984. Today, Eatontown is one of the most ethnically diverse townships in New Jersey and its residents are known for their distinctive Quaker lifestyle and culture. The Dutch-speaking community continues to make up a significant portion of the population, while Italian and Polish communities also exist. Despite these diversity threats, however, Eatontown remains a vibrant community with strong cultural ties that continue to support one another today.
Eatontown was originally a series of small villages in the Township of Eatontown, New Jersey. The village became an incorporated town on May 10, 1868. The original town site included what is now the heart of the current city of Eatontown. It was named for General Israel Putnam and his wife Hannah Cook Putnam, who were instrumental in helping to develop the area. The first store opened in 1872 and it remains one of the oldest businesses in Eatontown today. The town quickly grew and by 1886 it had a population of 1,500 people. By 1914, the population had reached 5,000 people and by 1928 its population totaled over 20,000 people.
