Eatontown was founded in 1875 by George White and his wife, Phoebe. The town was named for the Eatontonian Creek which ran through it. The first stores were built on Main Street. The town grew rapidly, and in 1907 it had a population of over 1,500 people. By 1920, the population had grown to 3,500 and by 1930 it had reached 6,000. In 1937, the Eatontown Mall opened and quickly became one of the largest shopping malls in New Jersey. It continued to grow until its closure in 1993.
