Eatontown is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Trenton-Ewing, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit present-day Eatontown were Dutchmen in 1624 and Frenchmen in 1629. The Dutch name for the town was "Heaton". In 1714, a group of English settlers led by William Penn arrived and founded the township of Eatontown on August 29th. The settlement grew rapidly and by 1735 it had a population of 1,100 people. By 1800, when the Township Act of 1802 merged with Morris County, Eatontown had reached 4,000 people and became an incorporated municipality under its own charter dated March 14th 1806. The initial growth of Eatontown was due to its natural resources: fruit trees grew plentifully in downtown areas; coal was mined near Kingston Pike; iron ore was located near Clarksburg Road and Dorney Park; and watermelons were grown around Newtown Lake. However, as industry began to grow more quickly in adjacent townships during the early 19th century (e.g., steel production), development slowed down or stopped altogether inEatontown until after World War II when it boomed due to military activity (such as the Delaware Naval Ammunition Plant). Today’s economy is based largely on services provided by government agencies such as education and social assistance programs as well as private businesses including two hospitals – one affiliated with Newark University/Weill Cornell Medical Center (the second largest medical school outside New York City) – multiple shopping centers including Oneida mall which has been called “the world’s most successful mall dollar-wise” – over 100 restaurants - many ethnic - some 3 million square feet - several high-rise buildings housing most public administration functions - major employers are American International Group Inc., Morristown Savings Bank & Trust Company (a large insurance company), Verizon Wireless Communications Inc., PSEG plc., Comcast Corporation etc.. In addition to its significant retail sector which employs over 2k workers statewide (and locally employing 5000 more through employment within municipal government),Eatontowntoworking major companies that have their headquarters here include Manulife Financial Corp., Sysco Foods Corp., Ameritech National Incorporated (/networks/ameritech/jpn), Verizon Wireless Communications Incorporated (/networks/verizonwireless/) - all three having land lines inside EatontOWN limits for both customer service and operations departments... And there are also several dozen small businesses that do not have access to city services but still rely heavily on residential customers for sales tax revenue... Overall this indicates that while much largerenterprises may be headquartered elsewhere today because they can no longer afford or lease space within city limits [Ed.: Singular], numerous mediumsized businesses remain active within these boundaries despite feeling limited or hobbled by availability of critical city services." Some believe this might be attributed partially to restrictive zoning ordinances put into place following World War II which discouraged any type of heavy industrialism from being built near schools or other popular amenities available closeby like Kingston Pike circa 1945 which allowed neighboring municipalities like Plainsboro Township (to the south) some semblance of self-sufficiency while municipally owned business entities continued producing key components used throughout North America via industries such assteelmaking until it too transitioned gradually into non-residential hands years later culminating with american international group inc.'s purchase[?]of plazaiga&hellip about 2002 latterly resulting in increased traffic volumes onto parkway making it difficult for smaller mom & pop businesses whose stores sit atop busy arterial streets visible only from Interstate 95)... Another contributing factor could be post war inflation rates meaning manufacturers could no longer lay off workers easily without risking becoming out Of Businessmuch less bankruptcy simply because prices had doubled since WW2 levels... With wages now comparable or even higher than they were prior theretofor local employees few felt compelled beyond good natured jest or polite thanks given upon their departure thereafter... Many of the early settlers were also farmers who became familiar with the area through their work around the farms of nearby Middletown and Rahway. One important factor that helped make Eatontown successful was its location on the river which made it easy to get food and goods needed for life along with access to transportation. This importance continued into the 20th century when heavy industry began moving into new areas such as Paterson and Glassboro while New Jersey remained largely rural.
Eatontown was founded in 1854 by John Eaton and his family. The town was first named "Eatonville", but the name was changed to "Eatontown" after the death of John's father, George Eaton. Eatontown became a borough in 1870 and a city in 1907. In 1954, the city merged with Township of Monmouth to form the current municipality of Monmouth County.
