The Eatontown Gun Safes Company was formed in 1892 by Augustus Weems. The company manufactured gun safes and became one of the leading manufacturers of safe firearms in the United States. In 1903, the company introduced its first pistol safe. The following year, they produced their first rifle safe. In 1916, the company merged with Winchester Safe Manufacturing Company to become Winchester Safe and Security Corporation. The merger allowed for a larger production capacity and gave rise to many new products such as handgun safes, rifle safes, shotgun safes, and armored car safes. In 1933, Winchester Safe & Security Corporation purchased Championsafe Inc., making it one of the largest safety manufacturers in North America. In 1957, WinchesterSafe & Security Corporation merged with American Can co-operative corporation to form American Can Corp., which remains one of the largest safety manufacturers today. In 1981, American Can Corp.'s ownership was transferred to Cerberus Capital Management LP; however, Cerberus sold most of its assets within two years including the Eatontown Gun Safes Company back to Weems' heirs in 1984. They continue manufacture firearms under contract from various commercial organizations across North America under their original name – Augustus Weems Firearms Corp..

The first mayor (and still current Mayor) was George Waddell from 1912 to 1921; he also served as Town Clerk from 1917 to 1919 and 1924 to 1927. During World War II, Eatontown became one of the largest wartime production centers for GM products in America due to its location on Lake Angelus near Newark – GM's main source of supply for troops stationed overseas during that time period. More than 1 million pounds (500 thousand kg) of GM products were produced at Eatontown during World War II—more than any other American manufacturing center! Additionally, between 1945 and 1950, over 10% of all sales generated by General Motors went through local channels such as Eatontown stores! In 1960, following passage of laws providing for municipal incorporation into townships throughout New Jersey; EatontOWN became an unincorporated community once again under direction and management by Aldermen Fredric Ladd (1936-1959), Harry Boccia (1952-1959), Willard Hagenbeck (1960-1964), Julius Weinreb (1965-1969), John Fenton III* (*1971-1975). The last Mayor before consolidation occurred was Leonard Weinreb (1976-1981). *John Fenton III died suddenly prior to his term’s expiration on January 3rd 1981 so his replacement Allan Kapp took office immediately
