East Orange, New Jersey is a town in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,569 at the 2010 census. The name "East Orange" originated from English settlers who named it after their original location on the east side of Long Island Sound. Asbury Park and Neptune City were adjacent towns before East Orange became its own town in 1839. However, as Amboy Township was created from portions of both townships in 1924, East Orange continued to be part of Amboy Township. In 1954, the township formed a second division within Essex County and annexation by Plainfield followed; this made East Orange an incorporated municipality under state law. On July 25, 1984, a fire destroyed any hope of restoring most of what had been lost during the Great Atlantic Hurricane Season that year; however save for one block around High Street which was saved due to its position near an open beachfront park and sand dunes used for recreation by locals and tourists alike since the early 1800s, much of the town center and surrounding areas were damaged or completely destroyed by winds and flooding that week-long onslaught. The community rebuilt quickly with support from donations from individuals and businesses throughout central NJ as well as FEMA assistance through grants given out specifically for rebuildingHurricane damage communities.
