East Orange, New Jersey is a town of about 22,000 residents located in the Middlesex County region of New Jersey. It is bordered by Newark to the north, Union City to the east, and Edison to the south. The town was founded in 1824 as an agricultural community on the eastern edge of what would become Newark. After years of growth and development, East Orange became a city in 1912. In 1978, it merged with South Brunswick to form East Brunswick-South Brunswick Township. In 1932, East Orange established itself as one of the first towns in United States history to pass a resolution supporting Prohibition. The town's mayor and selectmen passed a resolution that read: "We believe that prohibition is essential to maintain order and protect public morals." Although Prohibition was repealed in 1933 by Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal administration, some aspects of East Orange’s past remain contentious today. In recent years, there has been discussion around whether or not East Orange should be considered part of Bergen County – which includes Paramus – because its boundaries overlap with those of Bergen County municipalities such as Asbury Park and Teaneck. The town's gun case history began shortly after organized crime arrived in Newark from Italy during World War I. At this time Italian organized crimesters were known as “ suitcase men” due to their penchant for packing large quantities of contraband into small cases called "scalpers' cases". This method allowed them to move quickly and easily across country without being detected or apprehended along the way - something which made their smuggling efforts much easier than if they had transported their illicit cargo inside United States borders alone. By 1922 many Italian immigrants had settled in Newark including some who had brought over firearms specifically for underworld use within Italian American communities outside of Newark (e.g., Westwood Village near Midtown Manhattan). As early as 1919 these Italians had begun importing pistols into America illegally through various means including hawkingguns on street corners and purchasing pistols from American dealers at deeply discounted prices before shipping them back out again on larger containers interested only in profits rather than safety concerns for both buyers and sellers involved in interstate commerce at that time... Many Matteucci brothers also owned shotguns outright; yet Springfield Armory president John Browning testified during hearings before Congress regarding arms shipments between America & abroad stated categorically 'the Matteucci Shotgun Co.' could not have been guilty so far as shotgun sales are concerned since they did not handle any arms exports'. According to one source however this story may be apocryphal given that John Browning actually died prior to testifying... There is no record whatsoever linking any Matteucci shotguns ever soldto anyone other than Serbian agents working undercover for FBI while conducting illegal weaponssmuggling operations against our own government during WWI."

East Orange, New Jersey is a borough in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 13,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton metropolitan area. The oldest known settlement in East Orange was on Brainard Island (now part of North Beach) by Europeans who built their homes there between 1764 and 1768. The first town in what is now Essex County was called Rahway after Major General John Rahway and his regiment arrived there on July 10, 1777 during the American Revolutionary War. In 1834, East Orange became an incorporated town under the name of Perth Amboy due to its location near the then-new Perth Amboy Bridge over Passaic River. During World War II, much of eastern Essex County were burned as part of strategic bombing raids against Nazi targets in Germany and Italy; among many destroyed homes were those of local leaders such as Samuel Morse and Irving Place (now Oneonta), which still stand today as examples of early 20th century architecture. After the war ended, many people chose to move back into their original neighborhoods while others began to develop new areas around downtown East Orange including West Deptford Township and South Hackensack Township eastward along Route 9A and westward along Routes 9W and 201 respectively.
