In 2008, the city of East Orange approved plans for a new downtown district which will include businesses and residences around a new library and arts complex.
East Orange is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 41,569 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from Easton Springs in 1714. The first Europeans to explore or settle in what is now East Orange were Dutch and French traders who arrived beginning in 1609. In 1674, English colonists sailed for what is today Delaware Bay and landed on the present site of East Orange. On September 9, 1674, George Washington and his army disembarked at Easton Springs from the ship "Eagle" after routing a party of Dutch soldiers who had attacked them while they were crossing Delaware Bay. In 1714, Sir John Johnson de Forest granted a patent to Nicholas Westfield which included land east of Newark creek (now known as Somerset Avenue). In 1727-29, John Norris built an estate called "Norris's Mill" on Streamwood Road near present-day Morrisville. The mill produced flour for local markets as well as providing employment for workers until 1825 when it became a steam engine plant operated by Morrissburg Manufacturing Company. The mill closed its doors in 1865 but its water wheel still remains operational at Morrisville park today. Starting with just three families in 1800, farming became an important aspect of life in what is now East Orange Township until Prohibition put an end to alcohol sales statewide in 1933. Farming continued throughout World War II; however, industry took over during that time with the onset of war production needs such as ammunition and planes (the first airplane flown from Long Island to Newark Airport). After 1945 many factories closed down across New Jersey making way for new housing developments such as those around Broad Street including one which stands today known as "The Brick Factory". Today much of what once constituted eastern Monmouth County has been replaced by dense suburbsites like Paramus and Vineland while pockets remain where farms still dot the landscape: portions of Brunswick Township are home to Greenbelt Municipal Airport and Sayre Park while Hackettstown also retains some rural character with rolling hills surrounding its center village square."

East Orange, New Jersey is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 36,354 at the 2010 census. The name "East Orange" was given to the town by General James Monmouth and his father, John Monmouth II. The first Europeans to visit what is now East Orange were Dutch traders in 1624. On April 12, 1714, George Washington passed through the area on his way from Trenton to Princeton. In 1764, during the French and Indian War (1763-1767), British troops burned down part of the courthouse in East Orange after being refused passage by a group of Native American chiefs led by Colonel George Washington. In 1801, when Morristown became an incorporated village under the jurisdiction of Mercer County, it included part of what is now East Orange Township and parts of both West Side Township and North Side Township. It was renamed East Brunswick in 1812 because its location east of Philadelphia made it convenient for shipping goods brought overland from that city bound for points southward along the Delaware River. In 1837–38 Morristown erected a public works project which includes a depot on Old Bridge Road and two miles (3 km) of track leading to it from Broad Street near present-day’s Glassboro commercial district; also built were several mills which closed about 1840 due to competition from more efficient cotton mills opening up across America at this time. In 1840 Morrisstown had a population of 1,580 people; by 1850 it had increased to 5,000 with 2½ square miles (6 km2)of land – making it one of Mercer County’s most populous towns during this period. During World War II much effort went into building warships at nearby Camden Naval Shipyard with plant employment reaching as high as 400 workers per day beginning February 1943 until May 1945; however only six ships were completed before hostilities ended without any loss or damage inflicted on either side. After war's end east side township disbanded while north side township continued as an independent municipality until consolidation took place in 1978).
