East Orange, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Jersey City metropolitan area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now East Orange were farmers and their animals who came by land route from Pennsylvania in 1714. The Dutch founded Fort Nassau on the site of present day Starksboro in 1664 and then built Fort Christina on an even older fortification system dating back to 1624. In 1714, settlers from Pennsylvania arrived with three boats and set up a farmstead called "Breda" near modern Day East Orange. By 1751, when parts of Middlesex County were divided between Pennsylvania and New Jersey, "Breda" had grown into a small village of about 100 people which was known as Easton until 1852 when it became part of the larger township of Newark Township renamed after George Washington that same year. In 1802, John Stevens bought 1/4 acre (0.16 ha) for $5 from Nicholas Hahn for use as his farms' church graveyard which he sold to Abraham Davenport in 1815. That same year, Davenport also donated land east of wherepresent day Rutgers University stands for use as a public square named after him – later known as Weehawken Square – which still occupies that location today. In 1835–36 (the last full year before Trenton was incorporated), Wm Mifflin surveyed sections 3 and 4 extending southward from Snyder Street along Brunswick Avenue to form what is now Northumberland Avenue within the borders of Newark Township; this survey was executed by Mr.. Mifflin's brother Amos Mifflin who lived nearby at 222 Snyder Street until his death in 1830). The area that is now East Orange, New Jersey was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. The first European to settle in this area was Nicholas van den Bergh, a Catholic priest who arrived in 1624. In 1681, East Orange became part of English forces during the English Civil War. In 1764, the town was renamed to Monmouth County after Monmouthshire in southwest England. During the American Revolution, many Loyalists fled to East Orange and other parts of Monmouth County. The Battle of Passaic took place on October 11th, 1777 near East Orange, which led to British victory and the evacuation of New Jersey from the American Revolution. In 1810, Andrew Jackson was elected President of United States and moved his headquarters from Philadelphia to West Point on Long Island. This event is generally considered to be the beginning of the end for Old Pennsylvania because it demonstrated how powerful New York City had become at this point in history. In 1828, Monmouth County became a part of newly created Union Township when all but two townships in Middlesex County were absorbed into that new township. On January 1st 1830, these two remaining townships - Atlantic Township and Davidston Township - were also merged into Union Township proper along with Westwood (now Livingston) Borough pending final approval by the state legislature. The merger removed much local government autonomy including voting rights for each township’s citizens within Union Township itself as well as control over its own finances and borders with neighboring townships through annexation or purchase by others until such time as those townships could secede from Union Township altogether under state law should they choose so subjecting themselves again directly to state governance than what they experienced prior thereto).
