East Orange, New Jersey is a city in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 29,853 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1838 by English settlers as East Orange on the east bank of the Hackensack River. It grew rapidly after it became part of the new states of New Jersey and Pennsylvania in 1846 and 1956, respectively. The oldest Dutch settlement in what is now East Orange was called "Oosterschelde" (west cape). In 1664, General John Moore's expedition discovered and mapped the Delaware River system for England. Colonel Robert Morris started trading with the Lenape Indians at Oosterschelde in 1675. In 1711, Francis Drake sailed downriver from Manhattan to explore the area around present-day Newark Liberty International Airport and named West Indian Island after Captain John Smith's discovery of that name off Princeton Point on September 5th of that year. In 1735, trustees were appointed to purchase land from Jameson & Co., a group led by Genesee Township trustee Nathanael Greene for $1 million (equivalent to $106 million today). The first town lot was allocated to Colleton Township trustees on July 1st, 1736; however due to claims made by Major Nathanial Greene (Jno 3d), they re-allocated it to themselves on October 20th following his acquittal on an indictment which charged him with forging public documents while he served as lieutenant colonel in Colonel Nicholas Cooke's regiment during the American Revolution. On December 12th of that year, George Washington delivered a speech before a joint meeting of both houses of Congress recognizing "the excellent work done by our fathers upon this Continent". This event is generally considered to be when East Orange became an incorporated borough within Bergen County effective January 1st 1737 under charter granted by then Governor William Tryon II via letter dated February 2nd: "You are pleased therefore publish this Letter... whereby I certify you I have given effect unto your desire for incorporation into a Borough." On February 9th follow up letters patent were sent backdated March 8th setting out more specific regulations about how incorporation would take place and defining certain terms such as "a corporation limited only to colored people" – effectivelyeast orange becoming racially segregated untilanguages could be freely taught there starting in 1908 whitewashing local history Moses Harker who settled there shortly after arriving from Maryland offered his home talents carpentering so that tools might be available also during these early years helping build homes which still stand today including Harker House now used as office space The early days included many challenges faced by residents like those mentioned above but also promise made along with its growth including intermarriage among different groups creating opportunities for economic development During World War II much effort went into manufacturing munitions at Monmouth Park Arsenal including some key products like aircraft engines Fiat M4s for Air Force bombers; P-47 Thunderbolts used against targets deep inside Japan; etc After war ended government sold portions back to private citizens thru eminent domain process giving rise again much economic development taking place nearly 60 years later

East Orange, New Jersey was founded in 1736 by Dutch colonists. The town became a County seat in 1802 and held this title until 1861 when it was united with Middlesex County. East Orange is located on the Delaware River and because of its location nestled within the Delaware Valley, it has been nicknamed "The Valley of the Dolls." In 1736, two Dutch families settled in what is now East Orange. The Schuylkill Rangers were one of the first groups to settle here and they soon started trading with Native Americans. In 1739, three brothers from Amsterdam named Hendrickx set up shop in what is now East Orange. From their store, they traded goods with local Indians and also began missionary work among the Indians. In 1746, four more Dutch families arrived in what is now East Orange. They named their settlement Fort Annapolis after Annapolis City on Maryland's Eastern Shore which at that time was under British control. By 1800, there were twelveDutch families living in East Orange. During the Revolutionary War (1775-83), many residents of East Orange took part in battles against British forces as part of the patriot effort. The town saw some heavy fighting during both Yorktown and Saratoga campaign but fortunately no fatalities occurred due to battle injuries characteristic of then-new warfare techniques such as hand-to-hand combat which had not yet been developed fully. On September 14th, 1861, when New Jersey became a state following the American Civil War (1861-65), East Orange became one of its five county seats and remained so until 1971 when it merged into Middlesex County
East Orange, New Jersey is a borough in the U.S. state of New Jersey and is part of the Newark-Union Township, Bergen County metropolitan area. The population was 527 at the 2010 census. East Orange was incorporated as a town on March 26, 1876, from portions of Union Township and Westwood Township. On December 12, 1913, it became a borough after being annexed by Newark.
