East Orange, New Jersey is a town located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The population was 34,821 at the 2010 census. From its founding in 1764 until 1814, East Orange was part of Bergen County. On November 3, 1814, it became part of Uniontown Township and on April 15, 1835 it became a borough. As of the 2010 census, the borough's population was 27,880. The first inhabitants of what is now East Orange were Native Americans who arrived there from nearby Perth Amboy in 1764. At that time the territory that includes present-day East Orange and much of Middlesex County lay within Dutch West Indies (now Antigua and Barbuda). The area now comprising East Orange was divided among English colonies as they emerged from British rule: Nova Scotia (later Canada) received land to the east; New York (later America) got land to the west; while Pennsylvania took over parts of both North and South Jersey Shorelines. The first European settlers were not particularly interested in living near Indians— instead they developed farms round about where Indian Path intersects Route 9 today. On October 16, 1789 an Act for Acquiring Lands by Purchase Within this Province passed through two readings in both Houses of Parliament at which time 2 lots were purchased for £10 each by Captn James Gamble & Mr John Stevens from Chief Sevenoaks whose name appears on one lot only but his map bears no such mark so he must have been one of several buyers including Lt Col George Washington himself who had also bought Lots 1 & 2 together for £15 just twelve days earlier! This act marked Philadelphia’s entrance into British North America and provided a legal basis for township formation throughout most of what would become known as “New Jersey” after becoming a U.S.* territorially independent country upon independence from Great Britain in 1947* Newark bagged all seven townships east of Mountainside Road with brief interruptions until 1908 when Bound Brook became an official township too*. 1st George Washington bought Lots 1 & 2 together for £15 just 12 days earlier! Newark exploded with population growth in the late 19th century as businesses expanded into new areas such as education, transportation, and agriculture. The city experienced significant economic decline during World War II though it did experience some growth within manufacturing and other sectors after the war. By 1970, Newark had become one of America's most diverse cities with a wide range of cultures and economy.
